Position Information: The CommunityU internship is designed for young adults who are seeking a hands-on service opportunity and real world job experience completing natural resource management projects at various conservation and Hawaiian cultural sites throughout Oahu. The first phase of the internship lasts 8 weeks. Interns are in the field on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 8 am – 3:30 pm. Each Wednesday from 8 am – 2 pm, interns engage in life skills and personal development workshops, participate in cultural activities (e.g. papa ku’i’ai or traditional poi board carvig), hear guest speakers, and go on field trips or tours. The second phase of the internship requires a part-time commitment in which interns attend employment readiness training classes, field trips, and activities while continuing to participate in cultural activities. Mentoring and case management is provided throughout the program. Post-Program Opportunities: With support from Kupu, graduates of CommunityU select from a variety of post-program opportunities to pursue, including: advancement in further Kupu programs and internships, enrollment in higher education (vocational/trade school, community college, university), and placement in paid, on-the-job training positions. Location: CommunityU operates out of Kupu’s green training facility (commonly known as the “Net Shed”) located in Kewalo Basin, Oahu across from Ward Centers in Kaka’ako. June 8 – July 24, 2015 CU Eligibility Requirements: - Between 16-24 years of age - Must have reliable transportation to Kaka’ako, O’ahu - Must be able to attend the program full-time for the first 8 weeks, then part-time for the second 8 weeks - Must be able to physically and mentally complete rigorous outdoor activities - Interested in natural resource conservation, renewable energy, or sustainable living CU Benefits: - Participate in meaningful work rehabilitating Hawaii’s ecosystems and increasing the sustainability of the `aina - Learn valuable vocational and life skills that will give you a leg up in a competitive job market - Serve your community while having fun outdoors and making new friends! - Obtain your diploma through GED or C-Base - Upon successful completion of CommunityU, applicants to the C-Base Program receive a scholarship* to cover costs of books (* Registration and Mastery Fee not covered) - Gain eligibility for paid on-the-job training placements and/or financial assistance to cover costs of vocational training
