HONO O NA PALI SEABIRD MITIGATION PREDATOR CONTROL ASSISTANT – ID# 15304. Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. (3) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Kauai Natural Area Reserves Program, located in Lihue, Kauai. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $1,664-$2,500/Mon. DUTIES: Monitors and controls non-native invasive vertebrates including feral cats, rats, mice, barn owls, and feral pigs in the remote and rugged Hono O Na Pali (HONP) Natural Area Reserve. Works under the direction of the HONP Seabird Mitigation Predator Control Project Coordinator and the HONP Seabird Mitigation Project Specialist. Performs basic construction tasks and simple maintenance on tools and vehicles. Operates equipment such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS), handheld radios, cameras, etc. Operates 4-wheel drive (4WD) trucks or All-Terrain Vehicles. Collects various data in the field and enters data into computers. Assists in the preparation of simple maps and other tasks related to keeping accurate records of the field work accomplished. Lives and works in primitive conditions for up to two (2) weeks at time. Occasionally coordinates the activities of volunteers in feral animal control, as well as other resource management work such as alien plant control. Whenever possible, provides supplemental information on distribution and breeding success rates of endangered seabirds within the study areas and occasionally assists with seabird monitoring work if needed. PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. EXPERIENCE: At least two (2) years of work experience related to resource management or agriculture with a land management agency, company, or with the military relating to field operations (One (1) year of college level coursework from an accredited college or university in a related discipline (i.e., Biology, Zoology, or related Natural Science) may substitute for one (1) year of experience). ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Working knowledge of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology. Working knowledge of safe use of firearms. Ability to use compass, map, and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Ability to take detailed field notes and develop systems for data collection. Ability to lead volunteers and to coordinate field projects and data collection. Ability to safely apply herbicides. Ability to hunt feral animals using firearms, traps, and other prescribed methods. Ability to communicate well orally. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout the duration of employment. May be required to provide a clean driver’s abstract as deemed necessary by the job requirements and/or the project. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. If personal vehicle will be used for business purpose: Must possess proof of personal vehicle insurance and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must also provide the RCUH Human Resources Department with driver’s license information and keep current throughout the duration of employment. Failure to meet this requirement or falsification of documents may result in disciplinary action including and up to termination of employment. Post-Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess the American Red Cross certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certification following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire). Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety training course (acceptable to DOFAW and PCSU standards) within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or National Park Service and State of Hawaii Hunter Safety Program firearms certification (or equivalent out-of-state hunter safety program certification) within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to ten (10) consecutive days. Ability to hike up to twelve (12) miles on irregular terrain with backpacks weighing up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Natural Resources Management, Wildlife Management, or Environmental Science with basic/related biology courses. Field work with emphasis on feral cat trapping and control with a land management agency or a county, State, or Federal program in Hawaii. Previous experience monitoring endangered Hawaiian seabirds. Experience using remote cameras to monitor threats to endangered seabirds. Experience working in and around helicopters. Experience in identification of native Hawaiian plants and animals and non-native plants. Handyman skills desirable.
