O‘ahu Army Natural Resources Program is Hiring Ecosystem Restoration Field Worker May -October 2015 Want to Mālama `Āina? The O‘ahu Army Natural Resource Program (OANRP) has openings for three (3) temporary positions from April -September 2015. The positions are Temporary, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) performing project tasks on land managed by U.S. Army Garrison, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Office, Natural Recourse Section, on the island of Oahu. Duration of hire: maximum 20 weeks; dependent on performance and project need. Work week consists of four, 10-hour days (7:00 am-5:30 pm), Mondays-Thursdays; this schedule will occasionally include weekend work at select sites. The OANRP office and baseyard is located in Schofield Barracks, Wahiawa, O‘ahu. A primary goal of OANRP is to ensure that the military mission is accomplished and that training opportunities are realized to the fullest extent possible in a manner consistent with Federal, State and Army environmental quality policies. Work by all OANRP staff, both permanent and temporary, must be done with applicable Army, Federal, and State regulations and laws, especially regarding endangered species, safety and health, and pesticide use. As an Ecosystem Restoration Field Worker, each successful applicant will conduct field work and occasional office work designed and planned by the Ecosystem Restoration Program Manager and Specialists. This will include, but is not limited to: controlling invasive, alien weeds across rare taxa habitat with chemical and mechanical tools, surveying for and mapping incipient weeds, documenting day-to-day field work, and maintaining gear/equipment. OANRP will provide training as needed to allow Field Workers to complete actions; this will include weed and native species identification, safe use of pesticides, and emergency response/first aid, and may include UXO and chainsaw training if deemed necessary. Management of tasks and plans takes place mostly on Army lands and select partner agency lands. Some activities may require working in areas with UXO. Field Workers may work closely with military personnel and equipment. Ecosystem Restoration Field Workers may interact with personnel from agencies/contractors such as the State Department of Land and Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Koolau Mountains Watershed Partnership, Waianae Mountains Watershed Partnership, Oahu Invasive Species Committee and Honolulu Board of Water Supply. Temporary hires will work as a team with other natural resource workers. Person-to-person contacts are primarily with Ecosystem Restoration staff and co-workers. Temporary hires will be required to hike, backpack, and camp with OANRP staff in rugged terrain, possibly for up to four (4) days at a time. The OANRP will provide essential gear needed for this position. The applicant must also have reliable transportation to work site and possess a valid driver’s license. MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 85% Implements natural resource management in the field including but not limited to invasive plant species control and removal using chemical (herbicide) and mechanical techniques (, surveying and mapping using GPS tools, and data collection. May also assist with other natural resource management duties according to project need; these may include restoration planting and fence maintenance. This position requires the ability to conduct work under strenuous outdoor conditions (e.g. extreme weather, mosquitos, steep terrain). Able to hike up to 10 miles per day, backpack with up to 35 pounds of weight, and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain for up to four (4) days at a time. 10% Baseyard work including but not limited to recording and reviewing data, documentation of day-to-day field work, maintaining field gear, baseyard grounds, vehicles, and other equipment, as needed. 5% Performs other duties as assigned.
