EMWP FIELD/DATA ASSISTANT – ID# 224626.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), East Maui Watershed Partnership (EMWP), located in Makawao, Maui. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $4,071/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Inputs collected metadata and spatial data into database and produces data for reports. Assists with downloading global positioning system (GPS) data. Assists with providing Geographic Information System (GIS) for all aerial and ground surveys. Participates regularly in field operations, including monitoring native ecosystems, controlling feral animal populations, building and maintaining fence lines, controlling alien plant invasions using chemical and mechanical means, and restoring native vegetation. Must assure safety, quality control, and prevent species dispersal. Field work requires the ability to drive project vehicles both on and off road, within the scope of training, and work in and around helicopters. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with coursework in Natural Resource Management, or data/GIS related programs and applications.

EXPERIENCE

Up to one (0-1) year of experience dealing with related biological resources or conducting natural resource management field work. Experience must include database, using GPS systems, and GIS management. Experience needs to be paid and documented (must include dates and hours/week).

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of or expertise in fieldwork techniques and data collection/management. Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Knowledgeable with Microsoft Access and Excel. Familiar with scientific methods as they relate to conservation actions. Some knowledge of ArcGIS software.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to use a Personal Computer (PC) and have working knowledge of Microsoft (MS) Access Database, ArcGIS and ArcGIS online mapping program and other Microsoft Office programs. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs. Ability to work with small, mechanized equipment in a safe manner. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to comprehend complex verbal and written instructions. Ability to make sound planning and logistical decisions in the field. Ability to use GPS tools and maps. Must have a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai`i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess Wilderness First Aid Certification and course in CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within three (3) months from date of hire or no later than employee’s first use of helicopter. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Ability to hike up to twelve (12) miles and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, for up to seven (7) consecutive days. Able to perform fieldwork involving elevation changes up to 4,500 feet in a day. Must not be acrophobic due to the need to fly by helicopter to remote locations and hike on or near vertical exposures.  Must camp overnight with team in remote watershed areas with adverse weather and rough terrain.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Knowledge of threats to native Hawaiian ecosystems from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i. Field experience in an active resource management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i. Experience with control of alien species and feral animals.
