INVASIVE ANT RESEARCH ASSISTANT – ID# 224447.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU) and the Hawai‘i Ant Lab, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $3,318/Mon.
DUTIES: Facilitates in protecting Hawai‘i’s environment from harmful alien species by assisting with implementing measures to prevent the introduction of alien pests into Hawai‘i, with special emphasis on the prevention of establishment and interisland spread of the Little Fire Ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) and the Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta). Drives project vehicles to assist with conducting surveys on invasive ants. Identifies specimens collected as a result of those surveys and samples submitted by the public and other agencies. Assists technical and scientific staff with implementing eradication and mitigation plans. Collects and enters experimental data. Keeps appropriate records of these activities. Assists with extension and research activities including preparation of extension materials (e.g., documents, flyers, and other materials). Carries out basic office administration and data entry procedures. May require interisland travel for periods of one to four (1-4) nights.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION |
High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. |
EXPERIENCE |
One to three (1-3) years of experience working in a science related or integrated pest management field. Some college coursework in biological sciences or related field may substitute for some experience. |
KNOWLEDGE |
Basic knowledge of entomology, invasive species issues, or integrated pest management principles. |
ABILITIES & SKILLS |
Must have good oral communication skills. Basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. |
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS |
Must be able to conduct fieldwork in remote locations under adverse conditions for prolonged periods. Must be able to carry up to fifty (50) pounds of equipment on a routine basis, unassisted. |

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Basic knowledge of global positioning systems (GPS). Some experience and knowledge of invasive ant species in Hawai‘i. |
