POSITION DESCRIPTION full job description
Maui Nui Botanical Gardens (MNBG) is seeking a qualified candidate to manage the overall care and maintenance of Maui Nui Botanical Gardens’ native plant landscape. Duties include grounds maintenance with the assistance of other team members, such as mowing, raking, weed whacking, coordinating mulch and compost deliveries, mulching and spreading compost, fertilizing, watering, trimming and pruning, staking, controlling weeds manually, and other weed control*. The Garden Maintenance Manager maintains and oversees, with minimal oversight, the water distribution lines and irrigation systems of MNBG, buildings and bathrooms, and informational signage. S/he supervises volunteers working in the garden along with other team members. S/he assists in preparing for and breaking down special events.
* While we recognize the inherent risks of using herbicide to control invasive vegetation, we and many leading conservation agencies understand that it is a valuable management tool when used correctly. MNBG does not use Roundup (glyphosate), but in certain cases may use other herbicides like horticultural vinegar or citrus oil may be used.
SCHEDULE
Full-time, 40 hours weekly.
Wednesday and Saturday availability desired.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus at least one year of professional experience in landscape management, horticulture, gardening, or similar field. Ability to observe plant health and make basic adjustments needed to improve plant health. Ability to communicate accomplishments and problems to the team. Must have basic familiarity with computers and a current driver’s license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of Native Hawaiian and Polynesian-introduced plant species, Hawaiian endangered plant species, and Hawaiian environments and/or ecosystems. Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, traditions, practices, and language. Familiarity with small engine maintenance and repair.
COMPENSATION
