The Position:

This is a full-time term position comprising mostly fieldwork. You must reside in Oahu or be willing to relocate.

Duties may include:

  • Conducting surveys for ESA Hawaiian waterbirds and MBTA listed species, including shorebirds, and seabirds, and identify species by sight and sound.
  • Documenting all observations of ESA waterbirds and MBTA listed species at project sites and preventing harm or harassment to ESA Hawaiian waterbirds or their nests by project actions.
  • Reporting incidents and take as appropriate.
  • Regularly communicating with Hamer project manager, client(s), and on-site construction personnel to keep all abreast of waterbird activities in the vicinity of the project.
  • Educating construction staff on safe procedures to avoid harm/harassment to ESA waterbirds and harm to non-protected birds.
  • Providing progress reports and attending teleconferences and on-site meetings about the project.

Eligibility Criteria:

In order to be considered for this position, you must have:

  • Biological monitor credentials /experience requirements: 4-year college degree related to natural resource management, wildlife biology, ornithology, or closely related discipline; OR individuals without a college degree have equivalent experience (minimum three years of field experience with Hawaiian waterbirds/ seabirds/ native wildlife research, monitoring, or surveys) AND
  • 640 hours of field experience with waterbird/ seabird research, monitoring, or surveys.

Our ideal match also has:

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel in Oahu.
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check and be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Previous field crew leadership experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft apps, data analysis, software, and tools.
  • Strong writing and organizational skills.

Salary: Up to $28.13 per hour depending on experience.
