Maui Nui Botanical Gardens (MNBG) is seeking a temporary Interim Nursery Manager in Kahului, Maui. MNBG is a 6-acre public botanical garden, with a mission to foster appreciation and understanding of Maui Nui’s plants and their role in Hawaiian cultural expression by providing a gathering place for discovery, education, and conservation.

Position Overview:

            The Interim Nursery Manager is responsible for the care and maintenance of the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens’  nursery plants on a temporary basis. They work with the nursery and garden staff to directly care for plants in the nursery and ensure plants intended for the Garden are planted in the garden plant collection. They help in preparing for and breaking down special events and occasionally interprets MNBG’s plant collection for visitors. This position is intended as a replacement for the Nursery and Landscape Manager duties while that staff member is on leave until approximately 6/1/24. Upon return of the Nursery and Landscape Manager, this position will be terminated.

Required:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus at least one year of professional horticultural experience, or an Associate’s degree or higher in botany, horticulture, or agriculture. Ability to observe plant health and make basic adjustments needed to improve plant health. Ability to pay close attention to detail, be receptive to feedback and able to respond in an efficient and accurate manner. Ability to communicate accomplishments and problems to the team.

Desired:

            Knowledge of Native Hawaiian and Polynesian-introduced plant species, Hawaiian endangered plant species, and Hawaiian environments and/or ecosystems. Knowledge of Hawaiian culture, traditions, practices, and language. Experience with irrigation systems maintenance and repair. Experience with propagation of plants by seed and cuttings.
