Maui Nui Botanical Gardens (MNBG) is seeking a full time Grounds and Maintenance Assistant in Kahului, Maui. MNBG is a 6-acre public botanical garden, with a mission to foster appreciation and understanding of Maui Nui’s plants and their role in Hawaiian cultural expression by providing a gathering place for discovery, education, and conservation.

Position Overview:
The Grounds and Maintenance Assistant assists in the overall care and maintenance of Maui Nui Botanical Gardens’ (MNBG) plant collections. They maintain, with minimal oversight, the garden and nursery areas of MNBG through watering and irrigation maintenance, mowing, weeding, trimming, raking, and other maintenance activities, as well as the water distribution lines and irrigation systems of MNBG, buildings and bathrooms, and informational signage. The Grounds and Maintenance Assistant supervises volunteers working in the garden, as needed. They assist in preparing for and breaking down special events and workshops. They interpret MNBG’s plant collection for visitors and may occasionally assist with hosting educational activities for visiting student groups.
Required:
At least one year of professional landscaping installation and/or maintenance experience including familiarity with small engine operations and maintenance. Ability to observe plant health and make basic adjustments needed to improve plant health, such as adjustments to watering, fertilizing, and identifying pests.
Desired:
Knowledge of Native Hawaiian and Polynesian-introduced plant species, Hawaiian endangered plant species, and Hawaiian environments and/or ecosystems. Familiarity with Hawaiian culture, traditions, practices, and language. Previous experience teaching or leading small group activities. Comfortable speaking before small groups. Associate’s degree or higher in botany, horticulture, agriculture, natural resources, or similar field.
