Title: Wildfire Resilient Landscapes Program Manager for Maui
Location: Maui, Hawaiʻi
Compensation: $34-$38 per hour (based on experience and qualifications)

Full-time
● 40 hours per week
● Work setup includes 60-70% virtual (work from home) and 30-40% in-person events and activities
● Must be available for pre-scheduled work events on weekends and evenings
● Frequent on-island travel and occasional inter-island travel

Overview
The Wildfire Resilient Landscapes Program Manager for Maui County will play a pivotal role in coordinating and implementing strategies to mitigate the risk of wildfires and promote resilient landscapes. Responsibilities will include collaborating with partners and stakeholders, providing education and technical assistance, and facilitating the planning and implementation of wildfire resilience projects.


About Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization
Founded in 2000, HWMO is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving as the state’s primary hub of wildfire information, resources, programming, and technical assistance. With a vision toward wildfire-ready and wildfire-prepared people and places, we support programs and partnerships that are proactive, collaborative in nature, and based off of the best available science. Our current initiatives encompass a wide array of activities, including public education and outreach, landscape-scale risk-reduction collaboratives and projects, community empowerment through our Firewise Communities Program & Network, risk assessment and planning, and policy engagement. We collaborate closely with fire and forestry agencies and community partners to achieve our mission.

 

Responsibilities
Project Planning and Coordination:
● Collaborating with stakeholders to plan and coordinate wildfire resilience projects, such as fuel reduction efforts and ecosystem restoration initiatives.
● Developing project timelines, budgets, and resource allocations.
● Coordinating with contractors, consultants, and volunteers to ensure project objectives are met efficiently.


Community Engagement and Outreach:
● Organizing and facilitating meetings, workshops, and events to educate community groups, partners, and stakeholders about wildfire risks, prevention strategies, emergency preparedness measures, and mitigation best practices.
● Responding to inquiries from partners and stakeholders, providing resources, and addressing concerns related to wildfire resilience.
● Collaborating with community groups, land managers/landowners, and local government agencies to foster partnerships and engage residents in wildfire resilience efforts.


Policy Advocacy and Collaboration with Community Leaders and Officials:
● Monitoring wildfire resilience policies, regulations, and best practices at the local, state, and federal levels.
● Advocating for policies and initiatives that support wildfire resilience objectives, such as land-use planning, building codes, and funding mechanisms.
● Collaborating with policymakers, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders to influence decision-making processes and promote effective wildfire resilience strategies.


Training and Capacity Building:
● Providing training and technical assistance to landowners, community leaders, and other stakeholders on wildfire prevention, mitigation, and preparedness techniques.
● Building the capacity of local organizations and agencies to implement wildfire resilience projects and initiatives.
● Developing and delivering educational materials, resources, and tools to support ongoing learning and skill development.


Data Management and Reporting:
● Maintain accurate records and analyze data related to program activities, expenditures, outcomes, and program effectiveness.
● Prepare regular reports and presentations to communicate program progress and impact to stakeholders and funders.
 

Qualifications
● Maui residents preferred
● Bachelor's degree in environmental science, natural resource management, forestry, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
● Demonstrated experience in program coordination, project management, or related roles in the environmental field.
● Strong understanding of Hawaii’s ecology, land management practices, and wildfire risk assessment and mitigation techniques.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively engage and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
● Experience in community outreach, education, and public speaking.
● Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and adapt to changing circumstances.
● Knowledge of relevant policies, regulations, and funding sources related to wildfire resilience is desirable.
● Ability to work independently and as a team, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
● Excellent computer skills and experience with Google programs is required.
● Proficiency in data management and analysis, with experience using software such as GIS, preferred.
● Willingness to travel and work flexible hours as needed.
