Regular, Part-Time (50% FTE), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), performing project tasks on land controlled by the U.S. Navy, located at the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF), located in Kekaha, Kauai. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $2,138 - $2,575/Mon. (@ 50% FTE) 

DUTIES:  Propagates and cultivates native plants. Collects seeds, cuttings, or whole plants from field. Grows plants in greenhouse/nursery, controlling pest species and assuring optimal growth and health for successful out planting. Maintains greenhouse, supplies, tools, and equipment. Coordinates activities with the supervising botanist, in terms of propagation, pest management, greenhouse maintenance and repairs, supply ordering, and use of supplies. Monitors growth survival and reproduction of propagules. Records propagation techniques used. Keeps track of lineage of all plants outplanted. Maintains catalogue of seeds collected and stored. Constructs database and inputs all data above. Prepares propagation plans describing appropriate species to be used; prepares collecting protocols, phytosanitation and genetic management guidelines; prepares specific guidance for out planting. Assists with other related programs such as environmental education. Coordinates with staff to plan and implement native plant related outreach programs. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Botany, Horticulture, Agriculture, or related field. (At least four (4) years of related experience managing a greenhouse, horticulture program, or native plant propagation project may substitute for Bachelor’s Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

Two to four (2-4) years of experience in greenhouse or nursery work.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of native plant species and weed species. Basic knowledge of principles of plant propagation, irrigation, pest control, safe application of pesticides and fertilizer. Knowledge of pesticide mixing, application, use and safety. Knowledge of greenhouse and horticultural procedures and methods.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to prepare and conduct outreach activities related to native plant propagation. Ability to use word processing, database and spreadsheet applications. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within twelve (12) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Able to hike in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions. Able to backpack, lift, and carry up to forty (40) pounds.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Previous experience in identification, propagation and out planting of native Hawaiian plants. Knowledge of Hawaiian conservation issues. Knowledge of Department of Defense natural resources programs, policies, and organizational contexts within which they are managed.
