SUSTAINABILITY COORDINATOR

Designs and implements an organization wide sustainability program including tracking and reporting on the ongoing sustainability and conservation initiatives in the Valley. Supports the installation and operates a new 660-gallon composter to process kitchen waste into mulch for the botanical gardens.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Sustainability Coordination.  Works with Grants Manager and Executive Director, department managers and concession operators on long-term and short-term plans for the sustainability initiatives for the Valley including waste, energy, water, conservation, and community outreach.     

  • Operates a food waste composter to process kitchen waste into mulch for the botanical gardens. 

  • Promotes the carbon off-set program (conservation trees).  Training staff to sell the program, strategically placing promotional materials, working with Marketing Coordinator and Photographer to produce social media content. Monitors and tracks sales. 

  • Maintains a database of sustainability metrics: water, electricity, recycling; and authors annual report of sustainability outcomes. 

  • Outside consultants and contractors:  Oversees work of outside consultants and contractors to ensure compliance with contract terms and budget.  

  • Volunteer services.  Works with the Volunteer Coordinator to identify projects appropriate for volunteer services. 

  • Positive and meaningful visitor experience and service are core values in the management and stewardship of Waimea Valley.  It is highly encouraged that staff possess cultural knowledge and practice to facilitate this mission with hospitality, sincerity and aloha. 

  • Regular attendance on a daily basis is required for this position. 

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Participates in community events and/or public relations activities as directed by Managers and/or Executive Director. 

  • Assists in the preparation of grant proposals and funding requests as needed. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Grants and Evaluation Manager. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY 

  • Must be able to critically evaluate proposals from outside contractors and consultants, prepare recommendations, and oversee work of outside contractors and consultants. 

  • Must be people-oriented and able to work well with others. 

  • Must be organized and self-starter.  Must exercise independent judgment to prioritize projects and respond to situations as they arise without direct supervision. 

  • Must have good oral and written communication skills. 

  • Must project a professional demeanor. 

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
