JOB TITLE: Hawai‘i Field Representative DEPARTMENT: Conservation Programs LOCATION: Maui Island STATUS: Full-time, benefited employee ABOUT THE CORAL REEF ALLIANCE The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) (www.coral.org) is a donor-supported non-profit organization that works globally to protect the health of coral reefs by integrating ecosystem management, sustainable tourism, and community partnerships. CORAL is based in Oakland, CA and employs field staff in coral reef destinations around the world. Our theory of change involves building reef resilience by working with communities to identify and solve local issues that threaten the health of coral reefs. CORAL has set an aggressive vision for growth and increased conservation action throughout this decade to meet the serious threats affecting coral reef ecosystems and the human communities they support. POSITION DESCRIPTION CORAL is seeking an experienced and resourceful individual to join our field team in the role of Hawai‘i Field Representative (HFR). The CORAL HFR will be based on Maui and will work closely with the Hawai‘i Field Manager (also based on Maui) and other program staff to support CORAL’s mission. She/he will assist with program implementation including outreach, education, relationship building, product development, and logistical support for completion of deliverables outlined in project and grant work plans. QUALIFICATIONS The Hawai‘i Field Representative will be a professional with a minimum of a BA/BS degree with at least two years of related work experience in community engagement, project implementation, education and outreach, hotel or hospitality, marine resource management, policy, or marine conservation. The position will require someone with strong outreach and communications skills, a desire to work closely with a broad set of community members, and a naturally outgoing personality. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • Experience working within Hawai‘i’s natural systems and knowledge of island ecosystem principles • Knowledge and awareness of, and experience working with and promoting, Hawaiian cultural practices within a resource conservation context • Experience in outreach and organizing in a community setting and multicultural context • Experience communicating scientific conservation principles to a lay audience and targeting outreach messages to a specific stakeholder or community group • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills and ability to complete tasks independently and efficiently and manage multiple and diverse projects simultaneously • Excellent written and oral communication, including strong public speaking skills • Ability to network, work, and communicate with diverse groups, including community members, private sector, fishers, land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, and the general public, and to learn the dynamics between the various marine conservation stakeholders • Proficient in common software applications, Microsoft Office, Adobe, and web browsers • Familiarity with online marketing and communication tools such as MailChimp, Constant Contact, or iContact • Resourceful and professional, ability to navigate modern community outreach tools, such as social media, in a responsible and effective manner • Access to a vehicle and home office (computer, printer, and internet service) PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • Experience working in a professional capacity in Hawai‘i for at least five years • Previous grants management experience • Familiarity with green building practices and wastewater systems • Knowledge of Hawai‘i tourism landscape, particularly the accommodations sector • Understanding of watershed concepts, stormwater management, and other water quality issues WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT The HFR will work from a home-based office on Maui, and may work in variable weather conditions, on difficult and hazardous terrain, coastal and marine environments and vessels, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions may: • Require physical exertion and/or muscular strain • Require snorkeling proficiency, lifeguard certification, and/or SCUBA certification • Require working independently from a home office setting • Require travel to neighboring Hawaiian islands, as well as CORAL’s international headquarters Salary commensurate with experience
