Become part of Hawaii’s conservation story

We are seeking 2 volunteers from late-May, 2015 through early-September, 2015 to assist in transect-based avian point counts on the Eastern side of Hawaii Island. The position will be based at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in conjunction with research conducted by Hawaii Cooperative Studies Unit and the U.S. Geological Survey Pacific Islands Ecosystems Research Center. Candidates need to be in excellent physical condition and will be expected to camp along the survey transect (backcountry camping) for up to 7 days at a time, hike with packs (50+ lbs.) over rough (lava) terrain and densely forested areas, in inclement (at times, very rainy and cold) weather. Previous point-count experience, knowledge of Hawaiian forest bird identification, and fieldwork in Hawaiian montane forests are desirable qualifications. Recent certification in CPR and Wilderness First Aid training are recommended qualifications. Housing will be provided within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and a daily stipend for food expenses will be provided (roughly $32/day).
