Position Summary:
CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues.

The Vegetation Control Technician position provides technical support to the Natural Resources Office at the U.S. Army Garrison, Pohakuloa, in the management of invasive plant species and endangered plant species. The work site is located at Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island, Hawaii. Most of the work is in the field, and includes collecting vegetation data, walking extensively on rough lava surfaces and uneven terrain, controlling vegetation using mechanical and chemical methods, and working extensively with hand tools and machinery as well as electronic data collection equipment. Employment is contingent upon funding for the duties described in the position description at Pohakuloa Training Area, Hawaii.

Due to the remoteness of some work sites and the time required to travel to them, occasional overnight camping near the work site will be required for up to three nights at a time.

Required Qualifications:    

  • High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent required.
  • Experience identifying plants and ability to learn to identify native and non-native plants.
  • Experience operating and maintaining various power equipment used in vegetation and fuels control including but not limited to line trimmers, backpack sprayers, chainsaws, etc.
  • Must have the ability to conduct repetitive actions; eye, hand, feet coordination; and occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Must be able to repetitively lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to walk several miles a day over rough lava terrain.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working as an effective team member and contributor.
  • Have a State of Hawaii Commercial Pesticide Applicator certification or ability to pass applicator exam and obtain within 3 months of employment. Must maintain Hawaii State Pesticide Applicator’s certification throughout employment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
