Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), located in Wailuku, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $3,976 - $4,743/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Assists with developing and implementing public outreach and education activities to raise public awareness about trail safety and hiking awareness/ethics, and generates support for the project’s efforts. Assists with developing and delivering presentations to community and school groups and drives to attend public events. Creates relevant content for social media posts. Coordinates and leads volunteer events and workshops and communicates and works with partner organizations and communities in joint outreach efforts. Coordinates all DLNR volunteer and intern facilitation, organization, and service trip implementation including overseeing up to thirty (30) volunteers. Assists in the preparation of reports, and prepares publications, press releases, and other public outreach documents. Obtains information on trails and land access and ensures information is filed in the project records/database. Must be willing to routinely work irregular hours, evenings, and weekends. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university. (Associate’s Degree in an education, outreach or natural resource field and two (2) years of professional experience may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree.).

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience working in a public outreach, education, volunteer coordination or resource management program aimed at the protection/restoration of Hawai‘i’s ecosystems or culture.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of Hawaiian biota and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of basic methods of trail maintenance in Hawai’i. Knowledge of volunteer management. Knowledge of common social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Proficient in word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet applications (MS Office, Google Suite, etc.), internet use, and have an aptitude to learn various publishing tools and software applications. Good organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and accurately with high degree of independence. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with automatic transmission. Ability to work on weekends, attend public events, and camp overnight occasionally. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must be able to complete basic First Aid/CPR training within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months. 

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to carry at least 40 pounds unassisted. Must be able to hike long distances (>1 mile) over rugged terrain in sometimes rainy, cold, and muddy conditions.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Familiar with biological principles and resources pertaining to Hawaiian ecosystems and alien/invasive species. Knowledge of Hawaiian language and cultural practices. Knowledge of trails within a Hawaiian cultural context. Experience working in an office to support and promote biological field activities. Experience in education, marketing, design, or related field. Experience and knowledge of ArcGIS or other mapping/data software. Knowledge of social marketing principles. At least one (1) year of manual labor or semi-skilled work experience, that includes three (3) months of natural resource management activities.
