Regular, Full Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO), University of Hawai‘i, located at Hawai‘i  Volcanoes National Park on the Island of Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $4,123/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Responsible for the development, maintenance, and use of spatial and reference data for implementation of HAVO Resources  Management (RM) project. Drives to field sites.  Creates, manages, and maintains database. Uploads Global Positioning System (GPS) data, assists in data analysis and final reports. Inputs and summarizes field data for incorporation into Geographic Information System (GIS). Uses GIS to produce map products to evaluate and facilitate fieldwork. Provides computer technical support for field crew. Participates in mechanical and chemical removal of invasive plant species in natural areas. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Geography, Computer Science, Natural Sciences or related field.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience with GIS and database applications. Demonstrated ability to summarize, analyze, and develop written reports on results of research. Experience working with natural resource management in Hawai‘i or elsewhere.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of forest ecology and threats from alien plant and animal invasions. Good working knowledge of ESRI mobile GPS applications, Garmin/Bluetooth receiver GPS systems and ArcGIS software.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Good organizational, communication and computer skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs.   Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety (A100) course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete basic chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and steep rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, for up to three (3) nights.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Knowledge of spatial analysis, GIS programming, graphic representation, computer modeling, and use of relational databases. Ability to update software and provide office Information Technology (IT) support. Botanical skills and invasive species management experience in Hawai‘i. Strong skills in scientific writing and have experience with statistical analysis. Knowledge of SQL Server or Python a plus. Familiarity with the National Park Service.
