Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Native Ecosystem Protection Management (NEPM) section, located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,834/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Works with the PCSU/NRM Public Outreach Coordinator to develop and implement the Public Engagement and Public Relations (PR) program for forestry, wildlife, and recreation issues on O’ahu, with the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Educates school groups, community members, and specialized groups on the purpose of the DOFAW programs, including, but not limited to, Forestry, Wildlife, Trails, Natural Area Reserves Program, Forest Health, and other natural resource management issues.  Coordinates volunteer projects, educational activities, and presentations for schools and community programs.  Assists in developing new approaches to conservation messaging and communications to reach key target audiences who may impact or influence Hawai‘i’s precious natural resources. Drives project vehicles to implement outreach strategies. Produces outreach products for specific target groups using ArcGIS (geographic information system) Storymaps and online mapping, web design, video, animations, graphics, images, flyers, etc. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Communications, Journalism, Environmental Studies, Education, Language, Cultural Studies, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of experience in public outreach, environmental education, or a similar type of position in or outside of Hawai‘i.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of natural resources management, public education, outreach techniques, and cross-cultural communication. Knowledge of the Hawaiian natural resources processes and cultural history in Hawai‘i.  Working knowledge of word processing and desktop publishing software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and Microsoft Office Suite.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Must be highly creative and demonstrate an ability to produce creative original content/media and outreach products. Ability to provide guidance, motivate, and engage students, volunteers, and other stakeholders through effective communication and leadership. Good interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and verbally. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, staff from other government agencies, stakeholders, volunteers, and the general public. Ability to meet changing priorities and responsibilities. Ability to complete assignments on a timely basis. Ability to identify issues and problem solve effectively. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No- Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to hike up to six (6) miles in remote areas and rugged terrain. Ability to backpack and lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.

POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies, procedures, and trainings and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies, procedures, and trainings.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.). 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Knowledge of Hawaiian language and culture. Familiarity with Federally listed plants, animals, and natural resource management issues on the Island of Oahu. Specialized experience in working with land-based agencies and community groups. Experience in working on resource conservation projects in Hawai‘i. Familiarity with the Division of Forestry & Wildlife.
