ENDANGERED FOREST BIRD FIELD ASSISTANT– ID# 14673. Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Kauai Forest Bird Recovery Project, located on Kauai. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,100/Mon. DUTIES: Participates in research and management projects for the recovery of Kauai’s threatened and endangered forest birds, with emphasis on Puaiohi (Myadestes palmeri), ‘Akikiki (Oreomystis bairdi), and ‘Akeke’e (Loxops caeruleirostris). Participates in research activities to determine factors influencing forest bird population dynamics, especially factors limiting populations. Enters field and Geographic Information System (GIS) data into computer files for information summary and reporting. Helps maintain electronic records and databases. Helps Coordinator develop and present materials for outreach and environmental education. Assists with equipment and vehicle management and maintenance. Participates in conscientious adherence to all safety and research protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. EXPERIENCE: Up to one (0-1) year of (paid or volunteer) experience in biological fieldwork. Experience with one or more of the following techniques: mist netting, banding and collecting blood samples from passerines; radio-tracking and re-sighting marked birds; conducting forest bird surveys and identifying birds by sight and sound; nest searching and monitoring; conducting vegetation surveys, quantifying avian food resources. Experience entering data. Demonstrated experience working in remote areas. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of the principles of avian population ecology and conservation. Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft programs (e.g., Excel, Word, Access). Ability and skills in techniques of avian population ecology. Ability to enter and manipulate data using spreadsheets and databases. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Must be able to identify individual birds by color bands and locate birds by their vocalizations. Ability to navigate off-trail in dense forest. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout duration of employment and be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to hike eight (8) miles on obscure trails with up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. Must be able to live and conduct fieldwork with other crew members in isolated field camps under inclement weather conditions for up to ten (10) days at a time on a regular basis. May require strenuous physical exertion and heavy lifting. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biological Sciences. At least one (1) year of (paid or volunteer) experience in biological fieldwork. Interest and background in forest bird ecology. Experience with most bird research techniques described above. Experience sampling insects and plants, and controlling invasive plants and animals. Experience working with native Hawaiian flora and fauna, especially Hawaiian forest birds, and familiarity with local conservation issues. Ability to identify Hawaiian forest birds by sight and sound. Familiarity with Geographic Information System (GIS) software (ArcGIS 10.x etc.) and database software (PostGres, Filemaker Pro, etc).
