BIISC Temporary Invasive Species Field Assistant Big Island Invasive Species Committee (BIISC) is looking to hire 3 technicians to work on our albizia control effort. BIISC is working with other agencies and community groups to implement an albizia control program in East Hawaii. Albizia is a fast growing, nitrogen fixing tree introduced to Hawaii in 1917. Albizia wood is brittle and shallow rooted, which makes it prone to breaking and falling over during high wind and storm events. Description of work: Work is primarily outdoors in East Hawaii and can include remote areas with rugged terrain that must be crossed on foot. Work also takes place in residential areas. Daily exposure to adverse conditions including extreme heat/cold, heavy rainfall, and mosquitoes is common. Position requires a flexible work schedule including early morning and late night hours and occasional weekends. Occasional overnight travel to other field sites, which may involve camping for up to four (4) nights, may be required. Excellent coordination skills required. Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights). Conducts field operations targeting invasive alien plant and animal species for control or eradication. Fieldwork involves reconnaissance, surveys, and mechanical/chemical removal for invasive alien species in natural, urban, and suburban areas. Keeps accurate and detailed records of treatment and control work. Operates a Global Positioning System (GPS) and downloads GPS units. Assists with maintenance of equipment/field gear, vehicles, and project baseyard, including proper storage of herbicides. Assists with public relations activities and events and attains favorable public relations with property owners and other members of the public. Contributes to creating and preserving a positive work environment and serves as a valued member of the field team. May enter data and perform various writing/reporting duties. Implements protocol to prevent seed dispersal, follows decontamination protocols, and conducts all operations according to accepted safety standards and established protocols. Fieldwork requires the ability to drive project vehicles both on and off road, hike long distances, and handle pesticides. This position requires the use of basic hand tools (machete, hatchet, hand saw) and herbicide application using hand pump and back pack sprayer, squirt bottles and other methods. Proper Personal Protective Equipment and pesticide training will be provided by BIISC. Workers will be supervised by a crew leader or more experienced staff member. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Duration of employment not to exceed 20 weeks.
