Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Social Sciences, Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), Hawai‘i Coral Reef Initiative (HCRI). Primary work location will be at the Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands (OCCL) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $5,416/Mon.
DUTIES: Assists with developing and attaining program goals and objectives. Conducts climate smart project research to identify eligible practices, monitoring, modeling, and cataloguing methods. Performs program planning, monitoring, and analysis. Manages and monitors carbon smart commodity project implementation and land management strategies to improve soil carbon via agriculture and agroforestry practices. Coordinates and evaluates program funding use; coordinates distribution of funding to eligible conservation pilot programs; and ensures implementation of project proposals over multiple rounds. Oversees grant awards and monitors compliance. Tracks budgets and monitors expenditures. Conducts carbon modeling and coordinates the general quantification of carbon sequestration for pilot projects. Develops and manages a monitoring, analysis, and assessment plans for carbon sequestration and soil health goals. Conducts related trainings and outreach for partners to ensure accurate assessments of project status. Researches and reviews recommendations made by the scientific community, and creates recommendations for land management practices and circular economy promotion at the policy and practitioner level. Plans and coordinates program activities, events, campaigns, outreach, and informational materials. Drives to events and meetings. Writes and edits proposals, technical reports, and conservation planning documents. Develops fact sheets and other written materials.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION |
Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Agricultural Science, Soil Science, Agroforestry, or closely related field. (Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Agricultural Science, Soil Science, Agroforestry, or closely related field and an additional two (2) year of related work experience may substitute for a Master’s Degree.). |
EXPERIENCE |
Three to five (3-5) years of experience in soil science, grazing, or closely related work experience. Experience should include soil conservation planning or practices and working with farmers and ranchers. |
KNOWLEDGE |
Working knowledge of soil, water, air, plant, and animal resource practices as each relates to agriculture and climate change. Knowledge of forestry, ranching, and agricultural industrial practices; organizational structures and economics; and statewide food and water resource availability. Knowledge of research methodology, including data collection, analysis, and reporting; budgeting and accounting practices and principles. Knowledge of Federal agricultural technical assistance programs. |
ABILITIES & SKILLS |
Ability to speak and write clearly and concisely, which includes the ability to clearly explain data, plans and policies, draft proposals, and draft reports requiring minimal review and editing. Ability to prepare conservation plans to accomplish specified goals and objectives. Ability to gather and display statistical or other program information in a manner effective for program analysis. Ability to undertake simple carbon modeling, mathmatical computations that feed into larger carbon accounting systems. Ability to understand carbon accounting methodology and apply it to extrapolate impact of sequestration in pilot projects. Proficient in Microsoft Office. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to conduct outreach and education and develop outreach materials, messaging, and campaigns for the target audience. Ability to review program documents and apply provisions of State and Federal agency policies and practices to determine compliance with such regulations. Ability to meet changing priorities and responsibilities and complete assignments on a timely basis. Must be a self-starter, goal-oriented, and highly organized. Ability to work with diverse user groups, cultures, and personalities. Must possess an understanding of the social and cultural environment of the locality. Ability to be a positive team player. Ability to remain resilient under varying circumstances while effectively meeting deadlines. Ability to be flexible with changing aspects and needs of job. Must be innovative, enthusiastic, and have initiative to create, develop, and implement programs. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, staff from other government agencies, agricultural community, stakeholders, and the general public. Ability to work independently and to prioritize tasks. Ability to use GPS devices. Ability to identify issues and problem solve effectively. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. |
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS |
Must be able work long hours outdoors in all weather, standing or sitting for extended periods, and walking over uneven terrain. Must be able to bend and carry objects weighing up to thirty (30) pounds unassisted. |

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Understanding of the resource management landscape of Hawai‘i. Experience with tropical soils, agroforestry, or farming. Experience working with multicultural stakeholders. Working knowledge of methods to develop, present, and monitor grants. |
