NEXT GENERATION PROGRAM ASSISTANT

[1.0 FTE, not to exceed twelve (12) months in duration]

The Hawaiʻi Conservation Alliance (the Alliance) is recruiting a full-time Next Generation Program Assistant. The position will be based in Honolulu, Oʻahu. The position will assist in the coordination and implementation of the Alliance’s priorities for capacity development, specifically initiatives of the Next Generation Program developed by the Alliance’s Nāhululeihiwakuipapa Subcommittee. The mission of the Nāhululeihiwakuipapa Subcommittee is to cultivate and model conservation leadership in Hawaiʻi using transdisciplinary strategies, generational bridging, and Hawaiian values to support the growth of future generations of environmental stewards.

The Next Generation Program Assistant will primarily help facilitate the rebuild of the Alliance’s online database, called Conservation Career Compass, which provides opportunities and resources for Hawaiʻi’s next generation of environmental leaders, students (8th – 12th and college) and emerging professionals, to pursue a career in conservation/natural resources sector. The position will participate in partnerships such as the Natural Resource Sector Partnership to support overlapping next generation priorities. In addition, support will be given to Alliance projects including the annual Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference. Our ideal candidate is an organized and detailoriented person who is comfortable managing simultaneous tasks under tight deadlines. We are seeking a creative, web savvy, outgoing, self-motivated individual with an aptitude for learning new skills, and ability to work independently and in a team setting. Duties & Responsibilities:

The Next Generation Program Assistant will support the Next Generation Program Coordinator in implementation of Program initiatives including:

  • • Conservation Career Compass Project – 40%
    • o Database Rebuild
      • ▪ Support scoping workshop to refine the design and content terminology used for the database and associated forward-facing website
      • ▪ Compile and organize feedback from partners on new database prototype
      • ▪ Liaise with current database users to ensure content is current and relevant and provide assistance with migration to the new database
      • ▪ Facilitate content upload from old database to new database
      • ▪ Support continued content development and harvesting including video segments, blog articles, etc.
         
    • o Outreach
      • ▪ Assist in expanding the reach of the database through direct outreach to students, educators, and natural resource employers
      • ▪ Perform public engagement and outreach activities including media and web outreach, public meetings, community events, exhibit booths etc.
      • ▪ Assist the Coordinator in liaising with educators and institutions across the archipelago to conduct conservation career presentations and events for high school and undergraduate students
  • • Social Media – 20%
    • o Create and post social media content across various social media platforms guided by Alliance social media strategy
    • o Maintain frequency of posting content according to Alliance social media calendar
    • o Track engagement with social media followers
    • o Solicit social media content from partners
    • o Create and distribute e-newsletters
  • • Natural Resource Sector Partnership (NRSP) – 15%
    • o Participate in NRSP advisory group, working groups [(1) Building Career Awareness, (2) Connecting Student to ʻĀina & Community, and (3) Investing in College & Career Prep], and full partnership meetings and assist with note-taking
    • o Coordinate with members of the NRSP to spread awareness and encourage utilization of Conservation Career Compass tool
  • • 2023 Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference – 15%
    • o Coordinate volunteers participating in the Work Exchange Program
    • o Assist in coordinating Student & Emerging Professionals Scholarship Program
    • o Assist in coordinating Student Awards Program
  • • Nāhululeihiwakuipapa Subcommittee – 5%
    • o Attend monthly meetings and assist with note-taking
    • o Assist with monthly meeting reminders and follow up on action items
  • • Other Duties As Assigned – 5%

Minimum Qualifications:

  • • Possession of a Bachelors Degree in a conservation related field and/or communications
  • • 1 year of related professional experience in Hawai‘i or the Pacific Islands.
  • • Passion and commitment to advancing Hawaii’s natural resource conservation, management and research efforts.
  • • Demonstrated ability to take initiative to complete work and resolve complex problems
  • • Demonstrated ability managing multiple tasks under deadlines
  • • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, individuals, team leaders and members.
  • • Experience using word processing applications such as Microsoft Office or Google apps
  • • Familiarity with and ability to learn digital media tools, video recording and editing, and various webbased social media tools (e.g. Instagram , Facebook, Twitter, Canva, Vimeo, etc.)
  • • Must have the ability to work harmoniously in a team

Desirable Qualifications:

  • • Familiarity with database management.
  • • 2 – 3 years of related professional experience 
  • • Experience working with high school and university students across the Hawaiian Islands
  • • Experience managing websites and/or social media accounts

Physical Demands: (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.) Duties require sitting, lifting, bending, stretching, and occasionally require lifting up to 30 lbs. Requires being able to adapt quickly to changing conditions. Must be able to carry and lift all outreach equipment and supplies from office to off-site locations. Must be physically able to access all work areas and perform all tasks and services required to fully perform the requirements of the job.

Location: The position is located in Honolulu, Oʻahu. May include inter-island travel.

Supervision/Evaluation of Performance: The position is administered by the Hawaiʻi Conservation Alliance Foundation in partnership with ProService Hawaiʻi. The Next Generation Program Coordinator supervises work plan and task execution. Regularly scheduled meetings with the Next Generation Program Coordinator and Executive Director will be conducted to review performance results and to discuss the necessary changes.

Status/Classification: Regular, at-will. Continuation of employment is dependent upon operational needs, availability of funds, and satisfactory performance. The position may be eligible for a hybrid telework schedule after training period and contingent upon performance. Qualified candidates will need to be available for inperson events and have reliable transportation. Work is conducted during regular office hours. Occasional afterhours or weekend work may be required depending on project needs.

Salary/Benefits: Annual salary is $35,360. Benefits include employer matched health insurance, 21 paid vacation and sick days per year and 13-14 annual paid holidays based on State of Hawaiʻi recognized holidays. Position is grant funded with funding currently secured for first year. Continutation of position beyond first year conditional on available funding.
