(4) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO), located on the Island of Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,100/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Inspects, repairs, and constructs feral ungulate control fences.  Drives to access field sites and occasionally travels to Hilo to make purchases. Will work in and around helicopters. Controls alien plants manually or with herbicides.  Monitors pig activity transects and alien plant transects.  Records field data on control and monitoring projects.  May assist in native plant restoration and endangered sea turtle, Nene, or petrel restoration programs, as assigned. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

Up to one (0-1) year of experience in alien plant or weed control, or fence construction.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of native and alien Hawaiian flora.  Knowledge of herbicide mixing, use, and safety.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Ability to use a compass and map. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire. If selected for use of chainsaws, must submit chainsaw training certification to PCSU prior to activity.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days.  Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:    

Previous experience controlling feral ungulates and alien plants with a land management agency.  Previous fence building experience.  Previous experience supervising or leading projects.
