POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Honolulu, HI
Conservation International (CI) was founded in 1987 and works in more than 30 countries on six continents to ensure a healthy, prosperous planet that supports us all. Since 2011, CI’s Hawai‘i program has partnered with individuals, community-based organizations, researchers, businesses, and natural resource management agencies to support equitable and effective marine management and sustain seafood production and consumption using the tools presented in traditional knowledge, science, and policy. CI Hawai‘i’s current projects range from supporting the perpetuation of traditional fishing and environmental observation practices to working with resource managers, policy-makers, and local industry leaders to find opportunities for collaborative action to improve the health of our ocean and the communities and livelihoods that depend on it.
The Community-based Monitoring Manager will oversee and implement small to moderate size CI Hawaiʻi conservation projects and collaborations focused on creating systemic changes to elevate the use and formal inclusion of Indigenous (Hawaiʻi) and local knowledge into ocean management and decision-making policies in Hawaiʻi. Current and future projects will emphasize place-based and collaborative marine management efforts that engage diverse voices and perspectives to develop solutions to fisheries and marine management challenges in Hawaiʻi. This position oversees key aspects of CI projects over the entire project cycle. This includes project planning, implementation, tracking, and reporting on deliverables and project status. The Community-based Monitoring Manager works across CI and within Hawaiʻi to build and nurture strong relationships with community, NGO, and agency partners to advance program initiatives focused around environmental monitoring and data collection. The Manager’s efforts will advance equitable and effective environmental monitoring and management systems for Hawaiʻi and contribute to the achievement’s of CI Hawaiʻi vision and mission. The position will be based on Hawaiʻi Island.
The Manager works closely with senior leadership to ensure project results meet project standards and project deliverables are completed on time and within budget. They establish project work plans including staffing and capacity building needs and may supervise up to three lower-level employees. Duties are performed under general direction.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Key Responsibilities
- • Co-design and support the implementation of environmental monitoring programs in Hawaiʻi with community, cultural practitioner, and agency partners.
- • Engage in individual and collaborative research on Indigenous knowledge (Hawaiʻi) creation, protection, and application in contemporary local, state, and federal marine management systems.
- • Collaborate with community, NGO, and agency partners to advance the inclusion of and formal use of diverse data sets from a variety of community-based, NGO, and agency sources and collaborations in place-based management action and decision-making.
- • Ensure partner/stakeholder standards and interests are respected , represented, and incorporated into project activities and deliverables. Review for compliance with partner/donor agreements.
Additional Responsibilities
- • Manage the preparation of reporting summaries and project narratives. Collaborate with CI operations and global support staff on project financial reporting.
- • Collaborate on program and project fundraising activities including project narrative, budget, and work plan development.
- • Perform related duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- • Periodic travel to various project sites, program offices, and other CI office locations.
- • Comfortable working out of doors for extended periods.
- • Ability to work outside the normal work schedule to meet project deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- • 4 years of field experience in marine science, fisheries science, ecology, environmental studies, environmental management, community planning, or other conservation-related disciplines. Bachelor's degree in a conservation-related discipline is a plus (not required).
- • 4 - 6 years of related work experience in project management including planning, budgeting, implementation, and reporting.
- • Demonstrated experience with building relationships and facilitating a variety of partnerships with community and Hawaiian lineal descendant members/groups, ocean resource users, Hawaiʻi-based NGOs, and Hawaiʻi resource management agencies.
- • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in traditional knowledge (Hawaiʻi) use and application in contemporary resource management.
- • Experience leading or participating in data collection, curatorship, and analysis using interdisciplinary methodologies and technologies.
- • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the perpetuation of cultural and local practices and principles (Hawaiʻi), especially related to subsistence seafood harvest and resource stewardship .
- • Strong organization and time management skills.
- • Team player and able to work effectively with diverse invdividuals and groups in a multicultural environment.
- • Solid written and verbal communication skills.
- • Proficient in written and spoken English.
- • Ability to work well under pressure, multitask, set priorities, and deliver quality results.
- • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and under general supervision.
- • Proficient in Microsoft programs.
Preferred
- • Documented experience and work with and within Indigenous Hawaiʻi and local communities to advance equitable resource management.
- • Conversational Hawaiian language skills
- • Broad knowledge of current marine conservation issues, priorities, collaborations, and opportunities in Hawaiʻi.
- • Ability to diagnose problems and identify creative solutions.
