Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO), located in Volcano, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $4,200/Mon.
DUTIES: Serves as the Field Crew Supervisor for the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO) personnel involved in habitat restoration and the identification, monitoring and controlling alien plant invasions using mechanical and chemical means. Other duties include mapping invasive species locations, recording control work and pesticide usage, driving to project sites, and assisting in public relations activities. Must adhere to equipment use, pesticide use, and invasive species prevention protocols, and inventory tools, equipment and supplies. Serves as project safety coordinator, and incorporates safety culture in program management and daily work/action plans (including applicable risk assessments).
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. |
EXPERIENCE |
Three to five (3-5) years of work experience (preferably in remote areas in Hawai‘i) on natural resources management projects including invasive plant control using mechanical and chemical means, as well as restoration work. Experience working on and troubleshooting complex invasive plant control projects with partners. Demonstrated experience with operating generators, chainsaws, and similar equipment used for performing assignments involving invasive plant control, reforestation, and land management. One to three (1-3) years of experience supervising or performing as the lead to subordinates on a natural resource management project or related field. |
KNOWLEDGE |
Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Strong working knowledge of activities related to invasive species fieldwork including herbicide, helicopters, chainsaws, survey methods and hand control methods. Knowledge of safety protocols. Knowledge of threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i, and field and environmental conditions in Hawai‘i. Familiarity with the residential communities and geography of Hawai’i Island. Demonstrated familiarity with relevant agencies regulations, and laws pertinent to invasive species control work. Knowledge of management principles including, but not limited to, supervising/developing employees, EEO, workplace safety, corrective/disciplinary actions, and administration of policies and procedures. |
ABILITIES & SKILLS |
Ability to recognize and identify common native and introduced plants. Ability to navigate to field sites using compass, map, and GPS hand-held units. Ability to use a computer to record technical field data and prepare report summaries. Ability to apply herbicides. Ability to use GPS and mobile field mapping applications. Ability to safely coordinate and manage helicopter operations involving the transportation of staff and field equipment (using external sling loads) to remote sites. Ability to communicate well with partners to ensure work is completed to specifications. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR or Wilderness First Aid (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain certification throughout duration of employment). Must be able to pass state and federal criminal history/record background check at initial hire. Must be able to complete an approved (NPS, USFS, or equivalent) chainsaw safety course within twelve (12) months from hire. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) and a helicopter external load (A219) training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. |
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS |
Must be able to conduct fieldwork in dense vegetation under difficult conditions (heat, rain, cold temperatures, poor footing). Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to five (5) consecutive days. Must be able to backpack and lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds. |
POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT |

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous fieldwork with emphasis on alien plant control with a land management agency. Familiarity with computers and data entry. Use of herbicides to control weedy vegetation in a forest environment. College courses or degree from an accredited college or university in Natural Sciences. Previous experience in the identification, propagation, and outplanting of rare, threatened, and endangered plant species. Previous experience with driving all-terrain vehicles (ATV), utility task vehicles (UTV). Helicopter training and experience. Wilderness First Responder certificate. |
