Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the College of Social Sciences, Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), Hawai‘i Coral Reef Initiative (HCRI) Research Program. Primary work location will be at the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) in Hilo on Hawai‘i Island. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,333/Mon.
DUTIES: Develops and expands education and outreach programs to promote local stewardship and effective marine management. Incorporates State and Federal agency policies and practices to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and directives. Coordinates outreach events. Develops and evaluates education and outreach messages, activities, products, and approaches to fishers, local communities, and the general public. Collaborates with natural resource managers to plan events and content. Conducts education and outreach activities with fishers, local communities, and the general public related to marine resource management. Drives to attend events. Develops and maintains working relationships with government agencies, NGOs, partners, volunteers, and the community. Participates in meetings related to communities and marine protected species and resource management. Assists in emergency response efforts for monk seal and sea turtle strandings or entanglements under the direction of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), which may involve handling turtles. Uses project vehicles to transport supplies associated with emergency response efforts. Collects monitoring data on species and shoreline condition. Compiles annual summary statistics related to monk seal and other marine protected species and marine turtle response efforts.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/TRAINING |
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with coursework in Marine Science, Education, or related field. (Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college with coursework in Marine Science, Education, or related field and an additional two (2) years of work experience in Environmental Science, Marine Science, or education and community programs may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree.). |
EXPERIENCE |
One to three (1-3) years of experience with education and community programs in Hawai‘i. Experience must include marine science-related research. Experience with natural resources management, public education, outreach techniques, and cross-cultural communication. |
KNOWLEDGE |
Knowledge of natural resources management, public education, outreach techniques, and cross-cultural communication. Knowledge of proper public contact and telephone etiquette. |
ABILITIES & SKILLS |
Proficient in Microsoft Office. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and verbally. Good oral and written communication including spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills. Ability to organize outreach events. Ability to review program documents and apply provisions of State and Federal agency policies and practices to determine compliance with such regulations. Ability to meet changing priorities and responsibilities and complete assignments on a timely basis. Must be a self-starter, goal- oriented, and organized. Ability to work with diverse user groups, cultures, and personalities. Must possess an understanding of the social and cultural environment of the locality. Ability to be a positive team player. Ability to remain resilient under varying circumstances while effectively meeting deadlines. Ability to be flexible with changing aspects and needs of job. Must be highly organized. Must be flexible, innovative, enthusiastic, and have initiative to create, develop, and implement programs. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, staff from other government agencies, stakeholders, volunteers, fishermen, and the general public. Ability to work independently and to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines. Ability to identify issues and problem solve effectively. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. |
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS |
Must be able work long hours outdoors in all weather, standing or sitting for extended periods, and walking over uneven terrain. Must be able to bend and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted. Comfortable working outdoors, around seawater, and in contact with marine animals. |

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Understanding of the resource management landscape of Hawai‘i. Knowledge of nearshore fisheries in Hawai‘i. Experience working with multicultural stakeholders. |
