This position is located in Hawaii Volcanoes National park, in the Division of Maintenance, and supports the Roads and Trails program. This is a full time TERM position. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service, and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months, with the possibility of incremental extensions up to a total of four years without further competition. This position is Subject to Periods of NonPay, and is expected to be placed in mandatory nonpay status for a minimum of 2 weeks up to a maximum of 6 months each year. Special Consideration: This position requires back country travel and camping two out of four weeks per month. Position is subject to shift rotation, night, and/or weekend work. DUTIES: Back to top You will serve as a Trails and Pack Animal Worker with the Maintenance Division of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Provide care for the stock and equipment used to maintain trails, assisting with sign making, installation, repair and painting of back country signs. Perform routine trail and back country cabin maintenance including regular cleaning of back country toilets and sanitizing water supplies. Use livestock to pack supplies in and out of the back country. Keep trails clear of the buildup of horse manure. Clear and dispose of litter including paper and human excrement from back country trail locations. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Physical Demands: Position requires a pre-employement physical. Requires bending, lifting, applying leverage and reaching. Must hike and ride long distances on back country trails which traverse steep trails up to 10,000 ft elevation. Must be in good physical condition to hike and or ride up to 12 miles per day and work at elevations. Working Conditions: Probationary Period: If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Drivers License: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid drivers license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License upon selection. Vehicle Operation: You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle and truck with animal trailer. Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Work Schedule: You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. Travel: You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 15 nights per month. You must obtain a government credit card for travel purposes. Government Credit Card: You will be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government credit card with travel and purchase authority.
