Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Natural Area Reserves Program, located in Kamuela, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,100/Mon.
DUTIES: Participates in a variety of activities associated with the Natural Area Reserves System (NARS) and the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW). Performs various resource management, ecosystem restoration, and monitoring activities around the Island of Hawai‘i. Monitors and controls non-native plants and invasive vertebrates (ungulate or predator control) in NARS. Drives project vehicle to work sites. Establishes and monitors transects to evaluate forest recovery and plant distribution, including rare and endangered species. Collects and analyzes technical field data. Regularly coordinates the activities of volunteers in alien plant control, feral animal control, and other resource management work.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of field experience working in natural resource management or closely related field. (At least one (1) year of college-level coursework from an accredited college or university in a related discipline (i.e., Biology, Zoology, or related Natural Science) may substitute for experience.). ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Working knowledge of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology. Ability to use map and compass to navigate in dense forests. Ability to use Global Positioning System (GPS) units to document rare element locations and remote monitoring plots and transects. Ability to take detailed field notes and develop systems for data collection. Ability to lead volunteers and to coordinate field projects and data collection. Ability to safely apply herbicides. Ability to construct, maintain, and repair ungulate exclusion fences. Ability to hunt feral animals using traps and dogs. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete external sling load training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds assisted. Ability to camp in remote areas for four to five (4-5) days a week. Ability to work at high altitudes, in cold and rainy or hot and dry conditions. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in identification of native Hawaiian plants and non-native plants. Experience in hunting feral animals. Experience using radio telemetry, GPS, and Geographic Information System (GIS). Knowledge of endangered species in Hawai‘i.
