HAWAIIAN HAWK RESEARCH TECHNICIAN – ID# 222186.   

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), East Hawai‘i Wildlife Program, located at the Hawai‘i Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) in Hilo, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.  

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,500.00/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Coordinates and implements the goal of conducting research on the habitat use and spatial movements of the Hawaiian Hawk within Ka‘ū District on Hawai‘i Island. Conducts fieldwork and collects standardized data of monitoring of Hawaiian Hawks to provide information on their spatial movements and habitats use. Leads capture and tagging of Hawaiian Hawks and conducts route surveys using playback and digital ArcGIS online survey forms. Leads tracking, re-sighting, and monitoring of tagged Hawaiian Hawks, by use of satellite tag data, compass and GPS navigation. Ensures proper collection and timely entry of data and other records by field assistants, and enters data as well for analysis. Updates databases, including in ArcGIS, and electronic records. Conducts maintenance of field equipment including proper storage of trapping equipment, firearms, satellite tags, and banding supplies. Assists with baseyard maintenance and maintaining and decontamination of project vehicles and equipment. Assists with field operations related to other Hawaiian forest bird recovery.  

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in biological, environmental sciences, or a related field. EXPERIENCE:  One to three (1-3) years of experience with capture, banding and tagging of raptors. Demonstrated experience working in remote areas. Experience must be well-documented (include dates and hours/week) and must be paid.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Basic knowledge of Hawaiian natural history.  Knowledge of field activities relating to natural resources management. Ability to capture, handle, band, and tag raptors independently. Ability to take detailed field notes and follow data collection protocols, and perform data entry into spreadsheets and databases. Proficient in use of Microsoft office programs (Excel, Word), and other software programs to undertake analysis and writing. Demonstrated ability to navigate in remote areas with and without a GPS unit and manage GPS metadata in ArcGIS. Ability to identify and document vegetation composition and forest structure using standardized protocols. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual or automatic transmission.  Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to conduct fieldwork in forest under cold, wet, and extremely rugged field conditions. Able to hike on poor footing conditions for up to ten (10) miles, carrying loads up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. Expected to live and work in remote field camps under primitive conditions in close quarters with other individuals for up to ten (10) consecutive days.  Requires biological fieldwork performed in rugged, wet, high elevation forests. Able to work around and fly in approved helicopters. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Working knowledge of identification of common native Hawaiian plants and birds, and familiarity with local conservation issues. Experience with conducting point-transect forest bird surveys; use of playback to attract forest birds, nest searching; conducting vegetation surveys, and quantifying food resources. Ability to deploy satellite tags and manage satellite metadata in an online geospatial program (e.g., Argos).
