EXTENDED CLOSING DATE:  February 15, 2022.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), Hawai`i Coral Reef Initiative (HCRI). Primary work location will be at the Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,750/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Facilitates the development of frameworks for community nearshore resource monitoring to support Hawai‘i’s Holomua: Marine 30x30 Initiative. Develops and standardizes community monitoring protocols, data standards, and data collection tracking process for key marine resources (e.g. ‘opihi (limpets), ‘ula (lobster), limu (algae), he‘e (octopus), water quality, etc.), as identified by each community entity. Facilitates the review of monitoring protocols with experts and communities through an iterative process, including meetings, emails, etc. Refines and finalizes the framework for monitoring methods and data collection. Identifies the process for a community to participate in monitoring and data collection and sharing. Drives to and implements a community marine monitoring pilot in the field that involves swimming and snorkeling to collect data on nearshore marine species. Provides technical assistance during the pilot to participating communities. Writes reports, handbook(s), agenda and other materials to ensure all deliverables are met. Develops community monitoring training videos and materials, including technical support resources. Hosts workshops to share the materials. Ability to travel to the neighbor islands (including using car rentals) for meetings at short notice as needed. Ability to attend evening and weekend meetings. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Marine Biology, Botany (emphasizing marine algae), or closely related field.  EXPERIENCE:  Two to four (2-4) years of experience with scientific monitoring, including the designing, implementing and analyzing data, which includes at least one (1) year working with communities in Hawai’i. Experience must show ability to respect and facilitate varying perspectives.  Experience must also include providing technical information and analyses. Community experience may include volunteer work or internships.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Working knowledge of nearshore marine monitoring protocols and the collection of research data. Working knowledge of workshop and meeting logistics planning. Knowledge of effective writing and communication techniques.  Knowledge of statistical theory and applications.  Knowledge of all  Federal, State, and county regulations requiring accessibility to written materials by persons with disabilities. Ability to observe, monitor, collect, and record data in the field, specifically nearshore waters. Ability to assess the accuracy, validity, and integrity of the data. Must be an effective communicator who can guide individuals through a process by staying neutral, encouraging open communication, being an active listener, and ensuring objectives are met. Ability to remain calm, focused, and objective in tense situations. Ability to attend to details while keeping big-picture goals in mind.  Ability to speak and write clearly, including the ability to analyze and clearly explain data, and draft reports requiring minimal review and editing. Ability to plan and facilitate small and large group meetings. Ability to ensure all deliverables are met. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office package (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and video conferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom).  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to swim and snorkel to participate in fieldwork to collect monitoring data.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience working collaboratively with fishing or subsistence communities in Hawai’i. Familiar with Hawai‘i’s fishing rules and regulations.  Completion of university level class(es) focused on tropical Indo-Pacific marine invertebrates or algae.
