Job Summary
Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo (UHH), Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $3,500/Mon.
DUTIES: Organizes and conducts field Global Navigation Satellite System/Global Positioning System (GNSS/GPS) campaign field surveys to collect geophysical deformation monitoring data. Monitors and collects data from signals. Ensures that field data are tabulated, processed, and entered into a relational database. Evaluates field data for accuracy and relevance to volcano monitoring and/or research goals.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Earth Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of combined field-oriented work and scientific data analysis experience. Appropriate field-oriented college-level coursework may substitute. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Basic knowledge of field data collection methods and familiarity with using field geophysical instruments. Fundamental knowledge of computer programming with Linux and/or shell scripting experience preferred. Knowledge of and ability to follow field health and safety procedures. Ability and keen interest to quickly learn geodetic data collection methods and data processing. Ability to plan, organize, and execute projects involving rigorous field data collection and geophysical interpretation. Excellent verbal and written communication and teamwork skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if personal vehicle is used on the job, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance and follow program requirements) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete USGS aviation and all assigned first-aid and safety trainings within three (3) months from date of hire and prior to independent field work. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work effectively at altitudes above 10,000 feet for periods of a full work day or more. Must be able to conduct field work requiring helicopter flights as a passenger and hiking long distances over uneven and rugged terrain around active lava flows and vents, wear and use applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) gas mask in compliance with OSHA requirements, and carry loads up to fifty (50) pounds. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer respiratory function test. Must be and maintain current and compliant with RCUH (or applicable federal, state or county) COVID-19 vaccination requirements from first day of employment. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS: As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Familiarity with Hawaiian volcanoes and/or experience working in similar volcanic terrain. Experience processing and analyzing Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data for volcanic systems.
