Description:

Implements field work designed and planned by the Stewardship Manager. Participates in stewardship efforts at Kualoa Ranch in Hakipuʻu, Kualoa, and Kaʻaʻawa ahupuaʻa. Performs active restoration projects and native forest management work including: native seed collection, greenhouse work, outplanting weed control, monitoring, and rare plant management. Assists with rare and endangered species management. Assists with the management of pastureland for grazing efficiency including invasive species control and fence repair. Participates in the control and or eradication of targeted alien species from forested and lowland areas using chemical (herbicide and insecticide) and or mechanical methods. Conducts native and non-native species inventories across Ranch lands. Maintains spring-fed loʻi kalo site involving harvesting, planting and weeding. Collects and analyzes technical field data, and utilizes global positioning units. Maintains and repairs field gear. Occasionally leads volunteer activities such as weed control, outplanting and other field work.

Minimum Qualifications: Education/Experience: At least 6 months field experience working or volunteer experience in or related to managing natural resources in Hawaii. Ability/Knowledge/Skills: Ability to safely use and maintain general landscape power and hand tools. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues and supervisors, and ability to work in a team setting.  Ability to work independently for extended periods of time. Must be able to navigate in remote off-trail locations. Ability to use word-processing and spreadsheet programs. Current valid driver’s license with good driving record. Ability to conduct safe 4WD Truck (including manual transition) and ATV operation. Physical requirements: Ability to conduct strenuous fieldwork in weather extremes (muddy and wet, or hot conditions). Must be able to conduct extensive walking or hiking in undeveloped, rock or steep areas, while carrying a backpack. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications: Education/Experience: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four year college or university in Biological Science, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science with basic or related biology courses. Experience conducting vegetation and or wildlife monitoring and data collection. Experience with herbicide use and weed control techniques. Ability to comprehend pesticide labels and mix herbicides. Understanding of interactions of threats in native ecosystems. Native Hawaiian flora and fauna identification skills and ability to utilize resources (online resources, taxonomic keys, etc.) to identify unknown plants. Ability to use geoprocessing tools such as a GPS. Knowledge of Hawaiian culture and language. Familiarity with kalo farming.

Starting pay: $22.50/hr
