PIPES PROGRAM LEADER – ID# 220604. University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. Regular, Full-
Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i (UH) at Hilo Office
of Research, Research & Community Partnerships Office, Pacific Internship Programs for
Exploring Science (PIPES), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is
dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability
of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MONTHLY SALARY:
Salary commensurate with qualifications. DUTIES: This key position will lead the efforts
and team of the Pacific Internship Programs for Exploring Science (PIPES), an
undergraduate experiential programming and related partnership efforts focused on the
care and resilience of island resources and community in order to engage and empower
local students to identify their role and pathways to aloha ‘āina. Leads the design,
planning and implementation of PIPES conservation summer internship and year-round
programming for local undergraduates in collaboration with staff, an advisory group, the
PI, and key partners. Leads and oversees team development and implementation of all
aspects of PIPES programs, including recruitment, logistics, staffing, intern and mentor
orientations, workshops, and internship field trips and meetings. Assesses the
effectiveness of PIPES program efforts. Drives to internship field trips and site visits.
Ensures program compliance with UH commitments to multiple sponsors and with
university and partner regulations. Develops and manages relationships with partner
organizations across Hawaiʻi and the Pacific focused on aloha ʻāina and conservation to
support and host PIPES interns, which includes project development, funding, and mentor
training. Develops and directs program budgets. Manages project awards and accounts
in collaboration with the fiscal office. Manages the overall administration of grant funds all
grant reporting. Builds relationships with potential sponsor organizations and funding
partnerships. Researches additional funding opportunities for the program and leads
grant proposal development and submission through UH processes. Promotes program
through analysis of program data and creation of outreach materials. Develops and
implements a communication plan for the program. Coordinates with other ʻāina-based
and natural resources program partners across the university and region to envision,
develop, and strengthen efforts to increase recruitment of Hawai‘i and Pacific students to
ʻāina-based fields of study and careers. This includes a focus on the care, study, and
resilience of island resources and communities in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. Engages in
university discussions to assure program alignment of university strategic initiatives.
Represents the office at statewide and region-wide conservation and education meetings,
and outreach events. Serves as main program representative with program sponsors.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an
accredited four (4) year college or university in Geography, Ecology, Biology,
Sustainability, or related conservation science, community, or natural resources field.
EXPERIENCE: At least two (2) years of overall experience coordinating programs for
building personal and professional pathways with participants of diverse backgrounds and
cultures; experience managing grant-funded programs, which include proposal and report
writing, budget management, and program evaluation; and experience working with
Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander communities, organizing community projects or
service activities, and building partnerships with institutional and community
organizations. Experience must include at least one (1) year of conducting scientific or
applied research that includes data collection and analysis. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:
Knowledge of Hawai‘i’s diverse ecosystems, conservation challenges, and social
landscapes. Familiarity with scientific research methods relative to conservation biology.
Familiarity with Hawaiian cultural protocol relevant to natural resource management.
Knowledge and familiarity with individuals and organizations in Hawai‘i focused on
addressing environmental and cultural issues in the region from research to communitybased
efforts. Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to lead and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and innovatively
develop creative approaches and solutions to meet program needs. Ability to facilitate
meetings with diverse groups of people. Ability to creatively develop programs and
sessions to address learning needs of group. Ability to coordinate program logistics for
group efforts. Proficient in computer programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and web
applications. Scientific and non-scientific writing skills. Must possess a valid driver’s
license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal
driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain
throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able
to complete the UH Title IX training within twelve (12) months from date of hire.
PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift and carry up to twenty-five
(25) pounds of equipment and materials. Able to traverse rough terrain and be exposed
to moderate environmental field conditions. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or
university in fields of study related to the care, study, and resilience of island resources
and communities. Experience with internship programs at a college level with diverse
audiences. Familiarity with funding mechanisms and sources for ʻāina-based
programming. Experience with multiple grant-writing and grant-management and
successes to support ideas and programs. Experience assessing program outcomes
using a variety of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Familiarity with science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and other island resources programs
within the UH system. Knowledge of fiscal systems related to purchasing, timesheets,
stipends, and other program logistics. Knowledge of different cultures of Hawai‘i and the
