OAHU NATURAL RESOURCES/ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION TECHNICIAN – ID# 220544. 

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Natural Resources/Ecosystem Restoration (NR/ER), Native Ecosystem Protection and Management (NEPM) Section,  located in Pearl City, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,497/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Conducts a broad spectrum of native ecosystem protection and management activities on the Island of Oahu.  Work involves control of non-native plants and animals; vegetation monitoring; seed collection; and outplanting native plants throughout the Oahu Natural Area Reserves System (NARS), as well as other managed lands.  Drives to access field sites. Leads field assistants, volunteers, and interns on work assignments. Performs maintenance on field equipment, vehicles, and infrastructure. Executes projects related to infrastructure development (e.g., fences, land zones, trails and baseyards), outreach and education (e.g., signage) and other critical items related to the Oahu NEPM mission. Tracks supplies and equipment inventories, and gives notification to supervisor when additional items will be required. Loads, unloads, aims, and shoots handguns, shotguns, rifles and other RCUH-authorized firearms from a variety of body positions in authorized project-related research or wildlife control programs. Tracks and reports field actions.  Data collection and reporting requires the use of Global Positioning Systems (GPS), ArcGIS, field notes, photographs, aerial surveys, and Microsoft Office.  Work environment is in remote mountainous conditions sometimes requiring helicopter travel and long irregular hours. Work is primarily located on the island of Oahu, but may occasionally take place on other islands. Must be able to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.  EXPERIENCE:  At least two (2) years of experience in work related to natural resource management.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora, fauna, and threats from alien species.  Working knowledge of weed control techniques and tools, including familiarity with pesticides. Knowledge of ecosystem restoration strategies and practices utilized in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of wildlife control techniques. Must be willing and able to work with and around pesticides. Ability to use compass, map, and GPS hand-held units.  Ability to input field data into a computer using database and spreadsheet programs.  Ability to communicate well orally and in writing. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate prior to use of firearms on the job (whichever comes first) and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must be able to pass state and federal criminal history/record background check at initial hire, at change of job requiring use of firearms and annually, which legally enables possession and use of firearms and ammunition throughout duration of employment. Must obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or National Park Service firearms training (or other comparable training) and State of Hawai‘i/DLNR Hunter Education Training Program firearms certification. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certifying agency or as required by state and federal laws. Failure to pass the firearms qualification requirements may be grounds for disqualification of part or all of the job duties. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire.  Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days.  Ability to hike up to ten (10) miles on irregular terrain with backpacks weighing up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. Must be able to conduct fieldwork in dense vegetation under difficult conditions (e.g., heat, rain, cold temperatures, and poor footing). POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  

 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resource Management or closely related field. At least one (1) year of direct natural resource management experience working with native ecosystems in Hawai‘i. Previous working experience with NEPM. Prior experience using firearms in a hunting or wildlife control situation.
