FORESTRY FIELD ASSISTANT (MAUI) – ID# 220534.  

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), working in support of the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Forest Management Section, located in Maui, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,490/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Participates regularly in field operations, including monitoring native ecosystems, controlling feral animal populations, building and maintaining fence lines, controlling alien plant invasions using chemical and mechanical means, and restoring native vegetation. Drives project vehicles to access field. Loads, unloads, aims, and shoots handguns, shotguns, rifles and other RCUH-authorized firearms from a variety of body positions in authorized project-related research or wildlife control programs. Performs these functions in a safe manner in varying environments and weather conditions. Disassembles, cleans, inspects and reassembles firearms. Maintains firearms and related equipment in a proper, functional, and safe manner. Implements protocol to prevent seed dispersal, follows decontamination protocols, and conducts all operations according to accepted safety standards and established protocols. Keeps accurate and detailed records of daily work. Operates a Global Positioning System (GPS) and downloads GPS units. Inputs and updates data and assists with the production of maps and other materials to guide daily field activities. Assists with maintenance of project baseyard, vehicles, and equipment/field gear, including proper storage of herbicides. Contributes to creating and preserving a positive work environment and serves as a valued member of the field team. Requires a flexible work schedule including early morning and late night hours and occasional weekends.  

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.  EXPERIENCE:  Up to one (0-1) year of experience in field activities related to natural resources management.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Basic knowledge of Hawaiian biota/natural history and threats from incipient alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai‘i. Knowledge of field activities relating to natural resources management. Knowledge of mechanical/chemical control techniques for all target species. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs and document work. Ability and experience working with small, mechanized equipment (chainsaws, etc.).  Basic computer skills. Ability to accurately collect and store data for target species survey and control activities. Ability to appropriately explain project objectives to the public. Ability to identify common native Hawaiian plants and common introduced weed species. Excellent coordination skills. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate prior to use of firearms on the job (whichever comes first) and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must be able to pass state and federal criminal history/record background check at initial hire, at change of job requiring use of firearms and annually, which legally enables possession and use of firearms and ammunition throughout duration of employment. Must obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or National Park Service firearms training (or other comparable training) and State of Hawai‘i/DLNR Hunter Education Training Program firearms certification. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certifying agency or as required by state and federal laws. Failure to pass the firearms qualification requirements may be grounds for disqualification of part or all of the job duties. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication Training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months from date of hire.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to backpack, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted. Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, for up to five (5) consecutive days. Regular overnight travel to other field sites, which may involve camping for up to four (4) nights, may be required. Daily exposure to adverse conditions, including extreme heat/cold, heavy rainfall, and mosquitoes is common. Must not be acrophobic (afraid of heights). SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience working in and around helicopters and using pesticides. Field experience in an active resource management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere, especially in the control of noxious/invasive species. Experience using handheld GPS units and ArcGIS software. Ability to make sound planning and logistical decisions in the field. Ability to identify a wide variety of native and alien plants/animals.
