HAWKSBILL TURTLE PROJECT COORDINATOR – ID# 220473. 

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park (HAVO), on the island of Hawai’i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY:  Salary commensurate with qualifications. 

 

DUTIES:  Coordinates and prioritizes activities related to the Hawksbill Turtle Recovery Project based on available personnel and budget and provides overall project direction. Directs monitoring, habitat restoration, and predator control at nesting beaches. Directs, supervises, and assigns work to Wildlife Survey Assistants (2 FTEs). Duties include, but are not limited to, supervision of work, personnel functions (hiring, promotions, and termination), and managing safety of direct reports. Prepares necessary permits and regulatory compliance documents for planned project to comply with State and Federal laws. Incorporates safety culture in program management and daily work/action plans (including applicable risk assessments). Coordinates staff accident investigations and reviews accident report for completeness and accuracy. Plans and oversees logistics in support of field monitoring (e.g., transportation of equipment, supplies, and personnel). Camps at nesting areas to locate and protect nests, rescue stranded hatchlings, tag adult turtles, and trap and kill predators. Drives project vehicles to work sites, and works in and around helicopters. Oversees collection and ensures accuracy of technical field data entries. Analyzes field data for information summary and prepares reports on management and monitoring projects. Identifies and seeks project funds from a variety of public and private entities to implement monitoring and protection of habitat. Writes project proposals and grants to various sources, creates and participates in presentations as necessary to supplement written requests. Manages project budget to ensure funding is obligated and expended appropriately. Prepares budget plans and reports.  Produces status and final reports to various funding sources as required. Conducts public outreach and education activities and events.  Works outdoors on extremely rough terrain, under heat and cold extremes, and under adverse weather conditions. Must be able to work an irregular schedule, including working on weekends and camping for up to six (6) days at a time. Requires excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills.

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Zoology, Conservation Biology, or a related biological science field.  EXPERIENCE:  Two to four (2-4) years of experience in field activities relating to sea turtle recovery monitoring and management, including at least one (1) year of grant writing and fundraising experience, and at least one (1) year of professional experience supervising work crews.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of natural resources management and endangered marine species management. Working knowledge of sea turtle conservation, biology, and threats. Working knowledge of the principles of ecology and wildlife biology. Knowledge of non-native animal control methods. Must be able to write and review grant proposals effectively. Excellent report writing skills. Skilled in hiring, supervising, and evaluating team members. Excellent oral and written communication and program management skills to guide and implement a research and management program. Good planning and interpersonal relationship skills are necessary to win acceptance and build capacity in the communities. Ability to identify issues and problem solve effectively. Ability to meet changing priorities and responsibilities and complete assignments on a timely basis. Experience patrolling for sea turtle nests and working with nesting sea turtles, including tagging, collecting samples and data for research, and conducting nest excavations. Basic computer skills in word processing and spreadsheets. Ability to work independently and to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines. Post Offer Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment.  Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to work outdoors on extremely rough terrain, and under adverse weather conditions. Able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Able to camp in remote locations for extended periods, up to six (6) nights at a time. Must be able to conduct work in the dark with a headlamp on red light mode, and at times without a headlamp. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience with Hawksbill Turtles. Knowledge of and skill in identifying and surveying native Hawaiian plant and animal species. Experience working with control of invasive plant and animal species in Hawaiian ecosystems. Knowledge of nearshore fisheries in Hawai‘i. Experience with databases and geographic information systems (GIS).
