JIMAR PIFSC BIOLOGICAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE – ID# 220367. Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Regional Office (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,728/Mon. DUTIES: Serves as the senior person leading remote field camps in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM). Performs daily duties related to maintenance and operation of the field camps. Assists the Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program (HMSRP) staff with planning and coordination of field activities for research and emergency response in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) and the main Hawaiian Islands (MHI). Collaborates with scientists within NMFS to conduct and support field research, recovery actions, and interventions for the Hawaiian monk seal. Collects and enters census, life history, and sampling data on Hawaiian monk seals into databases. Operates small boats, maintains boat logs and maintenance records, and assists with or coordinates repairs to boats, engines, and trailers. Responsible for returning and storing all field equipment and supplies at the end of each field season or other field activities. May need to work some weekends and holidays. Interisland travel is required. Drives to field camp and field project sites. May require transport via ship and/or aircraft. PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Marine Biology, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field. (Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in a related field plus three (3) years of relevant experience may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Marine Biology, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field.). EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of field experience, including experience working within small groups in remote settings, and handling or working with wildlife or other animals. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of personal computers, including use of word processing, spreadsheets, and databases. Must be able to meet and maintain United States Department of Commerce (DOC) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements to access work location. Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien. Good communications skills (both written and oral). Leadership and decision-making skills. Ability to perform data entry. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to meet US Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment. Must be able to obtain a forklift operator’s certification within twelve (12) months of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to obtain International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Shipper Training certification within twelve (12) months of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be NOAA certified for small boat operations (having completed Motorboat Operators Certification Course (MOCC) and NOAA small boat component training) within twelve (12) months of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to pass pre-
deployment training requirements, including wilderness first aid training before deployment to remote islands. Must be able to pass NOAA in-water kayaking test and snorkeling/swim tests and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete twenty-four (24) hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard certification within twelve (12) months of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete NOAA Laboratory Safety training within (12) twelve months of hire. Must be able to pass Emergency Egress Training prior to any field work that requires transport via United States Coast Guard C130 aircraft, or helicopter. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to swim. Must be able to work long hours in the sun. Ability to physically capture and restrain adult seals. Ability to work in remote locations for extended periods of time. Must be able to walk up to seven (7) miles in the sand carrying twenty-five to thirty-five (25-35) pounds of field gear. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels, which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations, and maintain throughout duration of employment. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Prior field experience in a Hawaiian monk seal field camp. Previous experience in field or laboratory studies of wildlife, handling marine mammals, and data entry. Ability to perform basic data analysis. Ability to conduct routine maintenance on small boats. Knowledge and familiarity of Hawaiian waters.
