Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. (2) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service positions with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Koolau Mountains Watershed Partnership (KMWP), located in Pearl City, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $2,600/Mon.
DUTIES: Assists the KMWP and its partners in conducting fieldwork to implement the KMWP Management Plan and address landscape-level watershed threats. Work will focus on the protection of the native Hawaiian forest and related water resources within the approximately one hundred thousand (100,000) acres of forested watershed in the Koolau Mountains. Assists with efforts to complete field and other watershed conservation activities, such as native ecosystem and watershed monitoring, feral animal control, fence line building and maintenance, native plant restoration, and mechanical/chemical alien plant control. Drives project vehicles to work sites. Rides in helicopters to access field sites. Records detailed field data and spatial information, and inputs data into Global Positioning System (GPS) and computer systems. Maintains field equipment and assists with public relations activities. Level II May occasionally rappel and attend training as needed. This is a progression job, all new hires enter at Level I and will be promoted to Level II based on satisfactory work performance, demonstrated competence on job skills/requirements, and operational needs. Works irregular hours under difficult conditions.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. EXPERIENCE: Up to one (0-1) year of work experience with biological resources, conservation, or natural resource management in Hawaii. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Basic knowledge of Hawaiian biota/natural history. Familiarity with invasive species and Hawaii. Knowledge of herbicide use and field activities relating to natural resources management. Knowledge of identification of common native Hawaiian plants and common introduced weed species. Ability to use GPS unit, altimeter, compass, maps, and power tools (chainsaws, weed whackers, etc.). Ability to use word-processing and spreadsheet programs. Ability to identify common native Hawaiian and alien plants. Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing. Must possess a valid drivers license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal drivers insurance equivalent to Hawaiis No-Fault Drivers Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with automatic transmission.
Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a criminal background check. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within three (3) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within twelve (12) months of from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employees initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must possess Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certificating agency. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and steep rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to four (4) consecutive days. Ability to backpack, lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Fieldwork with emphasis on natural resource management, alien plant control, or watershed management with a land management agency. Experience conducting biological surveys within the Koolau in Hawaii. Previous experience monitoring and mapping vegetation and stream resources. Previous fence building or construction experience. Familiarity with computers, data entry, GIS, and use of GPS units. Experience working in and around helicopters and using herbicides to control weedy vegetation. Rappelling experience. College courses or Bachelors Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Natural Sciences.
