MNSRP FIELD BIOLOGY ASSISTANT – ID# 220390. 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project (MNSRP), located on the islands of Maui Nui (Maui, Kaho’olawe, Moloka’i & Lāna‘i).  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $2,490/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Monitors wildlife impacts of the human built environment. Searches for and documents the presence of seabirds and other flora & fauna. Duties include incidental take monitoring, seabird population survey and monitoring, biological monitoring, restoration work on habitat for endangered and native species, mapping species locations, and recording habitat work, worker hours, and materials usage. Fieldwork requires the ability to drive project vehicles both on and off road; and within the scope of training, handles pesticides, use air guns and other approved predator control methods. Enters and processes data in the project office. Keeps accurate and detailed records of monitoring and treatment/control work. Assists in maintenance of project vehicles; care and maintenance of project equipment; and storage of herbicides, air guns, and tools. Assists with public relations activities and maintains good relationships with landowners. Position requires a flexible work schedule and includes early morning and late night hours, and occasional weekends. Overnight travel to field sites, which may involve camping for up to four (4) nights, will be required. Expected to travel to other Hawaiian Islands for monitoring and endangered seabird searches. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.  EXPERIENCE:  At least one (1) year of experience searching for difficult to detect targets (i.e. bird watching, hunting, tracking). Some experience working with small, mechanized equipment (chain saws, etc.).  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of field activities relating to agricultural or natural resources management. Basic computer skills, word processing, spread sheet. Basic oral and written communication skills.  Ability to read maps and aerial photographs and document work. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment). Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course (A100) within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to obtain State of Hawai‘i Certification for Application of Restricted Use Pesticides within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to four (4) consecutive days. Able to backpack and lift and carry up to (35) pounds unassisted and work in remote, often wet and cold mountain terrain. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience and knowledge of Hawai‘i’s biota, especially native plants and seabirds.  Field experience in an active resource management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai‘i or elsewhere, especially in searching for cryptic and rare species and their breeding sites.  Experience using handheld GPS units, particularly for purposes of data collection.  Familiarity with computers and data entry.  Experience with the use of pesticides.
