Duties and Responsibilities
 

  • Under the direction of the PI, assist in conducting an extension program for key stakeholders and communities on the value of Ohia forests and the threat of Rapid Ohia Death.
  • Responsible for organizing and implementing community meetings, events, and field days to support education on Rapid Ohia Death.
  • Develops and creates written handouts, on-line web based and social media informational materials on Rapid Ohia Death.
  • Assists in updating and managing content material on the Rapid Ohia Death program website.
  • Coordinates with outreach professionals across agencies (e.g. CTAHR, DLNR/DOFAW, the ISCs, the National Parks, and others) on all islands to deliver a statewide Rapid Ohia Death extension program.
  • Collaborates with Rapid Ohia Death researchers at UH and other agencies to keep abreast of the current state of the science.
  • Formulates and initiates assessment protocols to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.
  • Responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, and implementing project programs including workshops, community events, and stakeholder meetings that may occur after normal working hours and/or weekends at off-site locations.
  • Assists in the planning, preparation and submission of grant applications for continued program funding.

Minimum Qualifications
 

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in forestry, plant pathology, natural resources or related field and 0 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for N/A; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  • Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in Hawaii conservation demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
  • Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with Hawaii conservation.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the in conducting outreach and educational programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawai‘i Driver’s license (Class 3), comparable driver’s license, or other means of transportation which meets position needs.


Desirable Qualifications
 

  • Master’s degree in forestry, plant pathology, natural resources, conservation, or related field.
  • Knowledge of Rapid Ohia Death.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully communicating science with the public.
  • Demonstrated experience in conservation in Hawaii.
  • Demonstrated experience in outreach or environmental education programs in Hawaii.
  • Experience with writing and obtaining grant funding.
  • Familiarity with Hawaii Island geography and communities affected by Rapid Ohia Death.
  • Experience in website maintenance, development, social media use in education, and/or graphic design
