INVASIVE ANT RESEARCH TECHNICIAN (OAHU) – ID# 220213. 

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Hawai‘i Ant Lab (HAL), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $2,424-$4,372/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Facilitates more effective protection of Hawai‘i’s environment from harmful alien species by assisting the Invasive Ant Research Manager and Research Associate with implementation of measures to prevent the introduction and spread of alien pests in Hawai‘i, with special emphasis on prevention of establishment and interisland spread of the Little Fire Ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) and the Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta).  Plans and implements the surveillance and treatment program for the Little Fire Ant on Oahu.  Assists scientific staff with implementing eradication and mitigation plans. Drives to access field sites. Collects and enters survey and treatment data and keeps appropriate records of these activities.   Provides high quality technical advice on control of invasive ants to members of the public. Identifies ant samples and conducts demonstrations on applying various treatments against invasive ants.  Represents HAL at outreach events. Oversees Invasive Ant Research Assistants, plans their daily work programs, and ensures that survey and treatment targets for Oahu are met. Some tasks may require interisland travel for periods of one to four (1-4) nights. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Entomology, Agriculture, Zoology, or a related Natural Sciences field. (Associate’s Degree from an accredited community college in a relevant Natural Science field and three (3) years of experience in a research, natural resources, or extension environment may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree). EXPERIENCE:  At least three (3) years of experience working in a science related, agricultural, or integrated pest management field, to include at least one (1) year of experience leading a team.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Good working knowledge of entomology, invasive species issues, and integrated pest management principles. Knowledge of invasive ant species in Hawai‘i. Ability to operate a dissecting microscope and identify common ant species of Hawai‘i. Must have good oral communication skills.  Good computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets and database management. Ability to operate GPS systems, transfer waypoint data and produce maps. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to conduct field work in remote locations under adverse conditions for prolonged periods.  Must be capable of carrying up to fifty (50) pounds of equipment on a routine basis unassisted. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Certified pest control applicator (category nine (9) or ten (10)) or willingness to obtain certification.
