The University of Hawai'i Sea Grant College Program (Hawai'i Sea Grant) is one of 34 Sea Grant programs nationwide that comprise a functional network within our nation's universities and colleges that promote enhanced understanding, conservation, and wise use of coastal resources in the state, region, and nation. In partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Hawai'i Sea Grant supports and conducts an innovative program of research, education, and extension services that provide links among academia, federal, state and local government, industry, non-governmental organizations, and the local community. As part of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa's (UHM) prestigious School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Hawai'i Sea Grant is a system-wide and statewide program in Hawai'i with a presence in American Samoa, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
The incumbent serves as a member of the extension faculty of the University of Hawai'i Sea Grant College Program in the service of communities and decision-makers to understand and address impacts of coastal hazards, climate change, and sea-level rise in Hawai'i and the Pacific region.
The primary purpose of this Coastal Dune Restoration and Management Coordinator position is to provide program leadership, coordination, and technical expertise for a long-standing dune restoration and management program with primary focus on Maui, while including statewide engagement on related issues. This position will also provide technical and outreach assistance on broader issues relating to beach restoration, shoreline access, coastal management, and coastal hazards. As background, the dune restoration program on Maui has historically been implemented by volunteers with guidance from Hawai'i Sea Grant. In partnership with Maui County, Hawai'i Sea Grant will fulfill a primary coordination and leadership role in the continued implementation of the program. The Coastal Dune Restoration and Management Coordinator will maintain and expand program activities within Maui County, including support to Moloka'i and Lana'i. The responsibilities will also involve statewide coordination using Maui's successes to build statewide capacity.
Primary functions include, but are not limited to:
Conceive, implement, and complete independent projects related to dune restoration and management and seek funding to support expanded research and implementation.
The incumbent works independently and without close supervision under the general supervision of the Program Leader, Associate Director, and Director of Sea Grant, and performs most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected.

Demonstrated ability to conceive, plan, and manage projects and programs. Experience working with volunteers. Experience working with the public on conflict resolution, problem solving, collaboration, and controversial issues. Familiarity with and ability to analyze marine and coastal data and map products. Familiarity with surveying and mapping techniques. Familiarity with statutes, rules and ordinances at the County (Maui), State (Hawai'i) and Federal level covering shoreline management and coastal land use. Familiarity with Hawaiian shoreline characteristics and cultural/recreation practices, including historical shoreline erosion rates and trends, seasonal wave dynamics, coastal processes and hazards, coastal dune behavior and native coastal plant species. Familiarity with coastal hazard mitigation strategies, coastal engineering approaches, impacts on natural resources from sand extraction and nourishment operations, and impacts of alternative shore stabilization technologies. Familiarity with current research on climate change and sea-level rise. Knowledge of computer programs and geographical information systems including oceanographic wave and beach numerical modeling. Possess scientific training and documentation in the form of published results of original research in the field of coastal science or coastal policy.
