This position is responsible for the preservation, conservation and maintenance of plantation watershed capacities and natural resources. This is accomplished by involvement in programs of feral ungulate control, weed control, small mammal & invertebrate control, public (e.g. hunter) awareness & access, public outreach, native planting, research, monitoring, grant writing, and grant deliverable implementation.

The Watershed Field Supervisor will work closely with the Conservation Manger to plan, coordinate, and carry out field operations duties necessary to implement the department’s management plan. Work duties to be conducted in the office and in remote field areas. 

Description of Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and manage department’s field operations, including logistics, biological and spatial data collection, procuring and maintaining needed equipment and supplies, scheduling and directing helicopter operations, planning daily field priorities, and documenting day-to-day fieldwork. 
  • Coordinates field operations with landowners, agencies, and other cooperators. 
  • Train field leaders, technician, seasonal interns, temporary hires, and volunteers in all appropriate aspects of department operations, including field procedures, equipment use and care, fence construction and maintenance, herbicide and/or pesticide application, feral animal control and helicopter operations. 
  • Supervise and work in the field with a team of 2-6 crew members plus up to 12 volunteers, seasonal interns and/or temporary hires.
  • Participate in rappelling operations, within the scope of training, to achieve project goals.
  • Direct Participation and delegate responsibilities for completion of project assignments to field crew members and/or other.
  • Communicate and interact with various government agencies, partnerships, outside contractors, and volunteers.
  • Ensure all field operations are conducted in a safe manner following protocols.
  • Records detailed field data and summarize and coordinate data analysis using various computer programs.
  • Complete other task related to the department and company operations as requested.

Required Qualifications

Education/Training/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; preferably in Resource Management, Environmental Studies, or a related field
  • Three to four (3-4) years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • One to two (1-2) years of leadership/supervisory experience
  • Must possess valid driver’s license
  • Familiarity with outdoors and camping in wilderness areas

 

Abilities/Knowledge/Skills

Knowledgeable of Hawaiian biota and threats from incipient plant and animal invasions. Ability to work and camp in remote wilderness areas and rugged terrain under adverse weather conditions for five (5) days and four (4) nights at a time by foot and/or helicopter.  In addition, must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds and hike with 50-pound backpack for 10 miles in wilderness areas and rugged terrain. Operate 4-wheel drive and all-terrain vehicles with manual transmission Ability to read topographic maps, aerial photographs, and use of Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment. Ability to operate power tools including chain saw, weed eaters, generators, chippers, etc. Experience with Microsoft Office, computer use, database management, and use of GIS software. Must have observational and situational awareness and high level of attention to detail. Ability to make sound planning and logistical decisions. Excellent organizational and time management skills.  Strong leadership, leadership, interpersonal, and communication (oral and written) skills.  Must work both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

Research, field, or management experience involving native and alien species in Hawaii. Knowledge of ArcView GIS. Experience in collection and analysis of biological data. CPR/First Aid certification. Possession of Hawaii hunting license and hunter safety course certification preferred. Possession of Hawaii certification for commercial applicators of restricted pesticides preferred. Repelling experience.
