VRPPF PLANT PROPAGATION ASSISTANT – ID# 19670.
Pacific Biosciences Research Center. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Biosciences Research Center (PBRC), Center for Conservation Research & Training (CCRT), Volcano Rare Plant Propagation Facility (VRPPF), located at the Volcano Agricultural Experiment Station in Volcano, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $2,353/Mon.
DUTIES: Under the direction of the staff Horticulturalist, assists in propagation, out-planting and monitoring of native plants, which includes rare, threatened or endangered species in the greenhouse and in the field. Drives from facility to perform out-planting activities, routine greenhouse maintenance and repairs, and propagates and cultivates plants. Manages insect and pathogen pests, decontaminates plants before out-planting in designated sites, and nurtures them on site. Prepares reports of project accomplishments and problems. Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to occasionally work on holidays and/or weekends to cover greenhouse duties for holidays, which fall on Monday and/or Friday.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Agriculture, Horticulture, or a related field. EXPERIENCE: Up to one (0-1) year of experience in greenhouse or nursery work. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of Native Hawaiian plant species and weed species. Basic knowledge of the principles of plant propagation, irrigation, pest control, and safe application of pesticides and fertilizer. Must have knowledge of pesticide mixing, application, use and safety. Knowledge of greenhouse and horticultural procedures and methods. Ability to resolve wide-ranging problems through the use of creative reasoning/logic to accurately determine the cause of the problem(s) and address resolution of the problems(s) in an effective, innovative and timely manner. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information/ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups and individuals. Proficient with the operation of a personal computer, specifically skilled at using Word, Excel, E-mail, Database(s), etc. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Able to backpack, lift and carry at least forty (40) pounds unassisted. Ability to hike and camp in remote areas and rugged rough terrain under inclement weather conditions, up to five (5) days a week. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: At least one (1) year of experience in greenhouse or nursery work. Knowledge of Hawaiian conservation issues, familiar with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and usage.
