CSAV SEISMIC DATA ANALYST – ID# 19665.
University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo (UHH), Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM HOURLY RATE: $15.28/Hr.
DUTIES: Analyzes complex digitally recorded seismograms to identify event source type, phase arrival times, polarities, and amplitudes. Manually computes, evaluates, and interprets earthquake location, magnitude, and other source parameters for earthquakes in Hawai‘i using interactive computer programs, common office software, graphics software, and database software. Independently publishes recent earthquake information that meets established criteria in a timely manner to the Hawai‘i Volcano Observatory (HVO) public website. Improves completeness and consistency of reviewed earthquake solutions in the HVO earthquake catalog according to established seismographic network performance standards. Participates in the HVO duty seismologist rotation, which involves responding to seismic alarms, evaluating the significance of notifications for earthquake and volcanic hazards, and assisting with large earthquake response. Assists other HVO monitoring and science programs such as geology, gas, deformation, and drives to conduct seismic and other fieldwork.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Earth Sciences or a related field with a specialization in Seismology, Geophysics, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Sciences, or a combination thereof. EXPERIENCE: Up to one (0-1) year of experience with earthquake seismology and data analysis of seismic signal processing. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of an interactive seismic analysis software packages, such as AQMS (preferred), SeisComP3, Antelope, SEISAN, or similar. Ability to use common office software, graphics software, and database software. Ability to provide own field gear (e.g., gloves, canteen, sunscreen, rain gear, etc.) to conduct fieldwork. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete USGS aviation and safety training within twelve (12) months from date of hire. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work at altitudes of up to 13,000 feet. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a post offer respiratory test.
