The technician will be a member of a collaborative research project within the Institute of Pacific Islands Forestry of PSW, and will coordinate with staff and scientists within PSW and outside organizations to accomplish the objectives of an externally funded research project that test whether topographic models developed from remotely sensed imagery can inform restoration programs for threatened, endangered, and at-risk plant species (TER-S) in dryland ecosystems of Hawaii.

The technician will be responsible for performing a variety of recurring and complex duties in support of ecological research on forest and/or shrubland ecosystems. He/she will perform a variety of routine and frequently complex tasks involving forest plant projects and program planning activities. He/she will collect biological and vegetation specimens and samples and prepare them for laboratory analysis. The technician will be responsible for the accumulation, coding, transcription and processing of information; will edit and correct records; will provide quality control of automatic data processing entries; will tabulate results and prepare graphs and charts according to instructions. The technician will perform routine laboratory analysis of soil and plant tissues and will operate scientific equipment and datalogging devices. He/she will layout experimental plots by taking measurements and marking corners and boundaries. The employee will use botanical keys to identify plants encountered during field trips or surveys of research areas. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion related to conservation work requiring walking on rough terrain and the duration of the activity contributes to the arduous nature of the job. The work is performed in a forest and shrubland environment where the terrain may be steep, uneven, rocky, and covered in thick and tangled vegetation.
