NAPU'U NRM BOTANICAL TECHNICIAN – ID# 19637.
Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Napu'u Natural Resource Management (NNRM) at Pu'u Wa'awa'a and Pu'u Anahulu, located on the island of Hawaiʻi. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $2,497-$3,750/Mon.
DUTIES: Under the direction of the NNRM Project Coordinator, leads restoration, monitoring, and weed control actions in management units in the Project Area. Duties include, but are not limited to, facilitating plant propagule collection, seed collection, seed storage, propagation, planting, and monitoring of native Hawaiian plant species. Manages nursery operations and oversees weed and rodent abatement activities. Adapts to changing plans and communicates observations and ideas to supervisors to help develop solutions to new and on-going challenges faced in implementing project goals. Leads a variety of activities associated with the NNRM within managed conservation units including 1) controlling non-native plants through chemical and mechanical means, 2) individual rare tree fencing, 3) checking and repairing conservation fences, 4) collecting and analyzing technical field data. Drives project vehicles and rides in helicopters, as needed, to access field sites. Monitors native Hawaiian plants through installation of photo-points, rare plant field surveys, and outplant survival monitoring in management areas. Maintains databases and analyzes data to prepares reports, posters, and/or oral presentations for use in symposia and conferences. Must be willing to work occasional weekends.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Terrestrial Biology, Botany, Natural Resource Management, or related field. EXPERIENCE: One to three (1-3) years of experience in natural resource management, to include at least one (1) year of experience applying pesticides in a safe and effective manner in a natural setting and at least one (1) year of experience leading a team (concurrent experience is acceptable). ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora including threatened and endangered species and restoration techniques for native plants. Working knowledge of computers including word processing, spreadsheets, and mapping software. Working knowledge of plant propagation in a nursery or greenhouse, integrated pest management practices, and ungulate-proof fence construction and maintenance. Ability to identify native and non-native plants in Hawai‘i. Ability to use global positioning system (GPS) units and smart devices (e.g., tablets) and make maps of management work. Ability to operate power tools including weed whackers, chainsaws, and mowers. Ability to safely apply pesticides and lead pesticide application activities. Ability to take detailed field notes, collect data, and prepare reports. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to lead field assistants and interns. Ability to coordinate field projects and data collection. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete pesticide safety course within twelve (12) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete chainsaw training within (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted in remote areas on irregular and unmarked terrain, often under adverse physical conditions (e.g., heat, rain, rough terrain, poor footing). Ability to hike with backpack up to 12 miles over rough terrain, through thick vegetation, or on unmarked trails over various substrates (e.g., rough lava, open pasture, and thick, dry forests). Ability to camp in remote areas under inclement weather conditions for up to five (5) consecutive days. Considerable amount of bending, stooping, crouching, and standing for long periods. Ability to work in warm indoor environments while standing for extended periods of time. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in professional nursery management or the agriculture industry. Ability to identify common nursery plant pests, common plant diseases, and nutrient deficiency symptoms. Experience in propagation and cultivation of rare Hawaiian plant species. Knowledge of Pu'uwa'awa'a Forest Reserve and Pu'uanahulu Game Management Area.
