HCSU PROJECT COORDINATOR – ID# 19528.
Hawai‘i Cooperative Studies Unit. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo (UHH), Hawai‘i Cooperative Studies Unit (HCSU), located in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.
DUTIES: Primarily responsible for managing collaborative research projects related to conservation of natural resources in Hawai‘i and the Pacific coordinated by the Hawai‘i Cooperative Studies Unit (HCSU). Works in coordination with research partners and HCSU staff to support all aspects of project coordination, including field and office efforts. This includes project planning, proposal writing and submission, monitoring project progress and managing HCSU staff to ensure smooth functioning of all HCSU projects. Directs, supervises, and assigns work to HCSU staff. Works with University and Federal offices to manage and track all aspects of cooperative agreements according to sponsor-specific, University, State and Federal regulations, requirements and procedures. Monitors project expenditures as outlined in agreements, ensuring concurrence with approved budgets. Manages project reporting, deliverables and closeout. Ensures project compliance with sponsor and University regulations including permits, safety, biosafety, and animal care protocols.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university Environmental Science, Conservation, Natural Resources Management, or related field. EXPERIENCE: At least five (5) years of experience in managing, implementing, and ensuring compliance standards in a multi-project environment, which includes supervision of multiple staff working on conservation projects. Experience in managing grants and agreements related to natural resources projects. Experience in working on collaborative conservation projects with multiple partners. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Strong knowledge of Federal funding, managing cooperative agreements, and of the fiscal and personnel requirements needed for projects at an academic, research, or government institution. Strong knowledge of issues and partners involved with collaborative natural resource management projects. Knowledge of management principles including, but not limited to, supervising/developing employees, EEO, workplace safety, corrective/disciplinary actions, and administration of policies and procedures. Familiarity with natural resource management especially in relationship to Hawaiian ecosystems, and knowledge of native Hawaiian cultural practices relevant to resource management. Knowledge of permitting and safety compliance related to natural resources projects. Ability to monitor and track projects to ensure progress and compliance of cooperative agreements. Ability to supervise and manage a variety of staff in different field, office and laboratory situations on performance, compliance and problem-solving. Ability to establish work standards/expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives of ongoing work for direct reports. Ability to provide guidance, motivate, and engage direct reports through effective communication and leadership. Ability to assign work and to establish work rules and acceptable levels of quality and quantity of work. Ability to review work and evaluate performance, and develop required job competencies of direct reports. Ability to work with project managers to coordinate project efforts to enhance budget efficiency and accountability. Strong writing ability related to conservation topics and project reporting. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field. Experience in managing project and staff of RCUH or UH programs. Familiarity with UH and RCUH reports, policies and procedures. Knowledge of UH, RCUH, State of Hawai‘i and U.S. government accounting procedures and safety compliance and standards. Knowledge of U.S. federal cooperative agreements and related funding systems. Experience managing conservation related projects in Hawai‘i or the Pacific. Experience working with Hawai‘i and Pacific conservation federal, state and local partners.
