Department of Land and Natural Resources. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), located in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

 

MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.

 

DUTIES: Provides statistical analyses and expertise to research, monitoring, and survey efforts for DAR Research Corporation of the University of Hawai‘i (RCUH) direct projects that focus on fisheries and aquatic ecosystems to standards acceptable for peer reviewed products and to provide scientific context to support management decisions. Conducts statistical analyses of fisheries data to assess fisheries stocks and levels of take to provide scientific evaluation and justification to support management decisions and other resource agencies. Assists with development of proposed research questions, specific aims, objectives, and hypotheses as they relate to applied statistics used in fisheries and aquatic research. Assists with instrument deployments and laboratory sample processing to understand, evaluate, test, and revise efforts to improve methodology. Makes queries from data tables in backend of database for statistical analysis, modifies data within a database identified as errors in quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) reviews, and creates, modifies, and exports data tables as directed by project leaders. Writes the data analysis as part of Materials and Methods section and critically reviews Results section with respect to data analyses. Develops and adapts methods and statistical approaches to identify potential sampling bias. Advises staff on best practices associated with missing data/values in data sets. Requires interisland travel to collaborate with neighbor island personnel.

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Statistics, Mathematics, or a field such as Fisheries, Marine Biology, Oceanography, Natural Sciences with coursework in advanced Mathematics and Statistics. EXPERIENCE: Three to five (3-5) years of professional work experience in the review, analysis, and application of aquatic biological data and development of experimental design for fisheries and aquatic ecosystems. Demonstrated peer reviewed publication track record. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Demonstrated expertise in statistical tests of significance, including non-parametric analogues; analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), including non-parametric analogues; simple and multiple linear regression; logistic regression and generalized linear models; density estimation; recursive partitioning; scatterplot smoothers and generalized additive models; quantile regression; systematic reviews and meta-analysis; Bayesian inference; Principal Component Analysis; multidimensional scaling; cluster analysis; and other approaches commonly used in aquatic sciences and fisheries management. Demonstrated knowledge of programming languages such as R system, Python, or equivalent for data analysis using statistical computing. Knowledge of performing basic data manipulation of large tabular data sets as well as customizing analyses by writing/modifying/updating functions/codes for analysis tasks using programming languages. Working knowledge of databases. Working knowledge of geospatial statistics using Advanced Spatial Analysis/Spatial Statistic Toolbox. Ability to apply a variety of statistical analyses to a wide range of aquatic and fisheries data sets. Must be highly analytical and possess the ability to evaluate data and associated (data collection) techniques and offer recommendations on modifying and revising data collection to maximize results. Ability to advise personnel in statistical methods, manipulation of large tabular data sets, QA/QC practices, and application of analysis tasks using R system, Python, or equivalent. Must be detail-oriented and able to see overarching goals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: PhD from an accredited college or university in Statistics, Mathematics, or a field such as Fisheries, Marine Biology, or other related Natural Sciences field. Familiar with SQL language including data query, data manipulation, and data definition to support database and data management of diverse aquatic data sets. Familiar with other open source tools for geospatial statistics, including Quantum GIS (QGIS), GGIS Processing (model builder), and GRASS, in conjunction with the R system. Has a valid driver’s license. Familiarity with Hawaiian fisheries, fish species and aquatic ecosystems. Experience with aquatic data collection. Knowledge of RCUH and State policies and procedures.
