PCSU NR/ER FIELD PROJECT SUPERVISOR – ID# 19405. 

 

Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Natural Area Monitoring Program, Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Natural Resources/Ecosystem Restoration (NR/ER), located in Kamuela on the island of Hawai‘i, and may occasionally take place on other islands.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

 

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:  $2,649 - $4,918/Mon. 

 

DUTIES:  Plans, coordinates, implements, and manages the PCSU Natural Area Monitoring Program.  Directs and manages field crew with minimal supervision, performing various resource management and monitoring activities.  These include, but are not limited to, collection and analysis of technical field data using standardized methods to collect information about distribution of native and alien plants and animals within Natural Area Reserves (NARS), controlling alien plants with chemical and mechanical means, control of feral animals, maintenance and construction of fences, and other duties as assigned. Loads, unloads, aims, and shoots handguns, shotguns, rifles and other RCUH-authorized firearms from a variety of body positions in authorized project-related research or wildlife control programs. Performs these functions in a safe manner in varying environments and weather conditions. Disassembles, cleans, inspects and reassembles firearms. Maintains firearms and related equipment in a proper, functional, and safe manner.  Drives project vehicles to access field sites. Responsible for ordering and maintaining project equipment within program budget and writing quarterly updates, annual reports and work plans.  Supervises and instructs three (3) Field Project Technicians and interns.  Coordinates projects in propagating, out planting, and monitoring native plants.  Ensures that field operations follow and adhere to appropriate safety and operation policies/guidelines.  Oversees responsible wildlife trapping and safe firearm use in rugged field environments.  Records detailed field data and spatial information and inputs data into Global Positioning System (GPS) and computers for analysis.  Must be able to camp in remote areas for four to five (4-5) days in a week. 

 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Biology, Zoology, Botany, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science or in a Biological Science with at least two (2) non-introductory courses in Biology, Botany, Zoology, or Ecology.  EXPERIENCE:  At least two (2) years of experience in fieldwork/data collection related to conservation/natural resource protection.  Must have at least one year (1) of supervisory experience.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge of biology and Hawaiian natural history.  Working knowledge of word processing, database and spreadsheet applications.  Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapping programs and imagery.  Working knowledge of safe use of firearms. Ability to learn to recognize and correctly identify approximately 200 plants species.  Ability to use map and compass to navigate in dense forests.  Ability to use GPS units to document rare element locations and remote monitoring plots and transects.  Ability to take detailed field notes and develop systems for data collection.  Ability to lead field assistants and volunteers and to coordinate field projects and data collection.  Ability to safely apply herbicides.  Ability to construct, maintain and repair ungulate exclusion fences.  Ability to hunt feral animals using firearms, traps and dogs.  Ability to work independently. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate within three (3) months from date of hire or prior to use of firearms on the job (whichever comes first) and maintain certification throughout duration of employment. Must be able to pass state and federal criminal history/record background check at initial hire, at change of job requiring use of firearms and annually, which legally enables possession and use of firearms and ammunition throughout duration of employment. Must obtain and maintain National Rifle Association or National Park Service firearms training (or other comparable training) and State of Hawai‘i/DLNR Hunter Education Training Program firearms certification. As a condition of employment, all certifications must be obtained and maintained as specified by the certifying agency or as required by state and federal laws. Failure to pass the firearms qualification requirements may be grounds for disqualification of part or all of the job duties. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety course within three (3) months from date of hire.  Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Able to lift up to 60 pounds assisted.  Must be able to camp in remote areas for four to five (4-5) days in a week. POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  

 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Previous experience propagating and out planting native plants.  Previous fieldwork related to natural resources management and conservation biology, with emphasis on monitoring and management of feral animals and nonnative plants in Hawai‘i.  Hunting experience and firearms proficiency.  Knowledge of endangered species in Hawai‘i.  Knowledge of the Natural Area Reserves Program.
